Waiting for snow - A 5 minute free write

in Freewriters10 months ago

I have been living in Virginia for over a year now, and have yet to see any large amount of snow here. I find this strange as moving further up north usually means more snow. When I lived in Georgia I would see up to 8 inches of snow once in awhile but usually just a couple inches every year or two. But so far in Virginia I have only had a dusting at best. We have got everything else, wind, rain, thunder, hail, hot summers, cold winters but no snow.

Me and my foreman talk about the uncertainty of the weather at this location. The forecasts always seem to be wrong. When they call for snow its usually pulled back to rain or freezing rain at the last day or two before they would call for it. But we both know from what the locals tell us we should be seeing snow soon.

So once again they are calling for snow, up to a few inches. But I am skeptical, as they have called for this amount of snow at least half a dozen times since we moved here. Speaking with the locals indeed the area can get blizzards and heavy snow. They said one year they got a few inches a day, over the course of a few days. Which became over a foot or two of snow as it all built up. That would be on a level I never experienced. When I dealt with snow it was usually just one day of snow, and then its over. So many in a row is something that may be quite foreign to me.

Waiting for the snow I know its just a matter of time until we get it here. The pond has froze over in the last year so we surely get cold enough weather for snow, just seems to be dry on the coldest days. And then just warm enough to be rain on the wet days.

I am sure for some they would be happy with less snow, or maybe others live in a place where it basically never happens. But here it suppose to snow just about every year and we have yet to have a good one so far.

Hoping I get to see over a foot of snow some time in my lifetime here in Virginia.

The weather has been crazy all over the world. The difference between what I remember as a kid and what the weather is like now is just staggering and I´m not even that old yet...

Greetings from currently freezing and snowy Prague :)

I know what you mean, last summer felt quite intense compared to most for me. Hopefully this is not a new trend.

Hah nice, hope you enjoy it.

Yeah, the mountains are weird like that with the weather and often have lots of what are called micro-climates which are mainly due to the terrain. Happens a lot in places with lots of valleys.

That may be it, when I lived in Georgia the mountains seemed to do that as well.

Off to the west of us there are a bunch of valleys so that would make sense.

Yeah, that would make total sense. Most of the storms probably blow in from the west also.

What will have been the reason that the is no snow there in Virginia? Here in my country snow even come out today and every where was wet and cold. Nice to read from you my boss

I am not sure, maybe just unlucky.. or maybe others would consider that being lucky.. lol

thanks man

Saludos

Thanks actually it did arrive just a day ago so I am quite glad. Yeah I do feel I am impatient when it comes to snow. I have had maybe 10 snow days in my life so far.

Hah yeah I bet you do not get much snow at all. thanks for the comment.

You're lucky so far in the lack of snow. I remember digging my car out of three feet of snow in Philly once. Took an hour and I still couldn't go anywhere because the plows couldn't clear the roads fast enough!

Chances are a nice strong storm will pass through soon!

Ah damn yeah that does not sound fun at all. Luckily I have not had to dig my car out ever.. but maybe one day I will need to.

We had a few snow storms in Georgia that closed down the roads. It seems sometimes the roads just get so bad they become impassable.

Thanks, we got some snow a day or so ago. So I am happy now.

I saw that Nashville was supposed to get something like 6 to 8 inches the other day. I feel like the heavy snow has been pushing further and further south over the last couple of years. We don't see it in Michigan like we used to. I'm kind of shocked you haven't gotten it in Virginia. We live in a funny area of Michigan that the Saginaw Bay tends to insulate us from the really bad weather.

That is a lot of snow, I have only had up to 8 inches of snow in the past. Maybe it is, when I lived further south we would occasionally get a lot of snow. So I figured moving more to the central part of the US along the Atlantic would bring more.

Maybe I live in one of those spots as well, seems the weather here is different than the reports sometimes.

Could very well be. We only got about seven inches in this past storm. People north of us got a couple feet.

I would have thought too much snow would ruin your land or whatever crop you may still be growing over winter, and cause a lot more work for you, and that you'd rather avoid it?

Personally I'd love a bit of snow, I live by the seaside so snow rarely settles here. We had a very very light dust last week, I was so excited but I really had to squeeze my eyes to see it ☹️ I'm not holding my breath for any this year.

Btw Solo, I was wondering if you would consider supporting the Pinmapple proposal https://peakd.com/me/proposals/282 ? It's an extension of the one you previously supported. This proposal is currently funded but we could lose BT's vote very soon am looking for support to fill the gap when that happens. Your support would mean a lot to us. Thanks in advance

The grasses we seeded the fields with in the autumn have gone dormant. So as long as I do not drive over the areas with heavy equipment and rip up the ground they should be fine with the snow. The areas are all tilled up so it does not take much to tear up the seedlings, so we are staying off of the area.

I feel ya, I used to live where it nearly never snowed. I did not see any snow until I moved to Georgia.

No, I will not be voting for your proposal.

I hope you get some nice heavy snow and have some nice experience. As long as it's not disruptive, it would be perfect.

thanks for letting me know re the proposal

I remember when we moved from Florida to Missouri and could not wait for it to snow, after a week of it, I had enough and wished it would stop snowing. But I do know what you mean about wanting to see it. It was fun but got old fast.

Hah yeah that may be what ends up happening. We just got a few inches of snow in the last few days, so if this starts happening regally I may grow annoyed by it quickly..

Snow is an issue here in Europe as well at the moment.
In Belgium, where I originally come from it's snowing like between 10 and 20 cm which is quite exceptional. Not to mention places northern from Belgium (Holland) or eastern from Belgium (Germany)
In Mallorca, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, where I'm living now, we've got about 17 degrees now. this is exceptional too for the middle of the winter, but I still prefer this to snow and cold!

That would be alot of snow, I have only delt with snows up to around 8 inches which is around 20cm. That was indeed a lot, but I hear we can get feet of snow here so I have a new definition of a lot soon.

17c is quite warm for a winter. It rarely gets that warm here in the winters.

Well hope the weather stays in a way you like it.

Where is "here" for you?

It's an interesting appearance and I think when the snow falls the weather will be even colder. It's always hot in my area. And I've never felt snow in my life.

Snow is new to me after moving to the Atlantic coast. Before I never experienced any amount of snow besides a dusting.

Hope you can encounter it one day, it can be fun for a short time... before its just extra work to deal with.. haha

Heheheh.. yes friend... My place here is also dust that we can always feel. The road to where I work is often crossed by trucks so the road is destroyed and rarely repaired. If it's dry it's dusty, if it rains the roads are muddy.😁😁

Well, it sounds like you've been having a bit of a snow drought in Virginia. I mean, you've got everything else, but no snow. That's like a pizza without the cheese....lol

I can understand why you're skeptical about the forecasts especially since they've been wrong so many times. I hope that you will get to experience it even though it's a foot of snow someday too, in the meantime, enjoy the other weather surprises Virginia has to offer.

Hehe yeah its not normal that is for sure, but luckily we just got some and I am quite happy.

Just cannot count on the forecasts to be right. So I got my own weather station here on the farm to give me more local data about the weather.

You got some? My prayers worked... Lol

So I got my own weather station here on the farm to give me more local data about the weather.

That's really awesome 😍
