Discovery of Giant Mushroom!

Namaste!

This is my entry for #FungiFriday initiative by @ewkaw 🙏

This happened exactly a week ago, that is, last Friday evening. Another pleasant evening after a day of cloudy sky and some rain when I reached the park for a walk. The grass has grown a little longer after the recent rains. I was walking casually when suddenly, far away from me, I saw something white in the grass.

And even in my dreams, there was no thought of a mushroom because it was still twice the size of a baseball and I had never even seen a mushroom bigger than a cue ball. So I thought that someone must have thrown garbage in the park and I should clean it so I went closer to that thing.

As I took a few steps closer to it, I started seeing its shape like a half circle of thermocol inside a helmet. I thought it might have been blown here by the strong winds. I was still beyond the truth of this thing.

But then as I came a little closer to it, I realized that it was like a mushroom, although I still could not believe it because as I told you, I have always seen mushrooms of this size very small. But this was really a wonderful surprise.

This was an amazing experience for me, I don't know when and how it became so big here in a public place, how no one else has seen it till now. Just a day ago I came here for a walk and at that time I had not seen it here, it may have been a little small then but still it is growing here quite well is no less than a miracle.

I tried to take many pictures of it but the focus was not being set on its cap due to which everything else is visible except this mushroom. Although its stem is clearly visible in some pictures, I could not get the pictures of its cap as I wanted.

Apart from some minor cuts on its cap, this mushroom was completely safe. Do you remember the last time I posted about a mushroom which was edible but then the very next day I did not find it there? I didn't want to repeat that mistake again so this time I brought this mushroom home even though I am also not sure about it being edible.

And that's why this is my question to all you mushroom experts including the admin of this community, @ewkaw is this mushroom edible?

Although based on my little knowledge it looks like a button mushroom so should be completely edible Bbut still I want your opinion because the mushroom families are very large, diverse and also very very dangerous and I don't want to take any risk. PLEASE ANSWER! 🙏

At present, I have cut this big mushroom and kept it in my refrigerator and I have planted its little companion in a pot in the hope that this little mushroom will also become equal to its elder brother.

That's all for today's blog.

I hope you liked my Discovery and Phone Photography! ;)

The most important rule of mushroom picking is that if you dont know a mushroom, do not eat it.
If you are not sure about this one, simply don't try and eat it, cause it may end up very badly.

Second thing - I dont think transplanting mushrooms will work ;)

This rule is clouding my search😅 I was waiting to hear from you that yes of course this mushroom is edible, cook it with good spices and enjoy. 😅😅 Haahhhh... Okay, I know you are right mushrooms can be very dangerous. If there is any doubt it is better to leave it. And you are also right about transplanting mushrooms.. that little mushroom withered within a few days. :) Thank you for your kind response, I appreciate it very much! 💚🙏

I was waiting to hear from you that yes of course this mushroom is edible, cook it with good spices and enjoy.

Hahhaha sorry to disappoint you :D I am only sure of very few types and I would recommend those. Others... not so much.

Actually, you were right. However, I still don't know much about this mushroom and that's what makes it even more dangerous as you said If there is any doubt it is better to leave it. So thank you for your quick response! :)

I have no idea .... if you can eat it, but we have here in forest rule :)) if you not know not take it up, or if you eat it fill be last time you walk in garden :)) as many mushrooms are also highly poisonous.

I guess you're right, becoming Bear Grylls everywhere could prove dangerous. Better to throw that mushroom out. Thank you for your quick response! :)

Excellent images and very sharp.
I love the greenness of the grass and the whiteness of the mushrooms. Thanks for sharing. Happy day. Cheers and greetings.

Thank you for appreciating its beauty! 😊🙏

Wow, this is an extraordinary discovery, my friend, I have never seen mushrooms that big.

I too had never seen such a big mushroom before. It is indeed an extraordinary discovery my friend. :) Thank you for appreciating it!

I'm curious if you have eaten that mushroom and how it tastes😀

The taste will come later, first let's find out whether I will survive after eating it or not.😅😅

Good morning dear friend @untilwelearn
This has been a great day, you have found an impressive mushroom, I hope that the little one you have planted continues to grow
Beautiful shots, appreciate you sharing.
have a great day

That little mushroom withered within a few days, someone says mushrooms can't be transplanted. But it truly looks nice. Thank you for appreciating it. A great day to you too! :)

While reading your post I was also wondering what kind of mushroom it was, to know if it was dangerous or not. Hopefully it is edible, although it is also curious that something like such a large mushroom was in a public place and no one took it before.
Anyway, I wish you luck and that it is edible 😅.

I am also hoping for the same but till now no one is sure about it. It was actually surprising that this big mushroom was growing in a public place and no one had taken it before. Thank you for your wishes and this lovely comment! 😊💚

Thank you so much for this curation sir, this really means a lot!😊🙏🏼

I can't believe you found a mushroom as big as your hands @untilwelearn this is impressive
Beautiful photographs

I also couldn't even believed on my eyes when I saw it. :) Thank you for appreciating my photography!🙏🏼

What an epic find, I don't think it is a button mushroom as it has white gills rather than pink or brown gills. What did it smell like? Did it smell like a button mushroom?

Now after being kept in the refrigerator for the last one week, there is no smell in it, but when I brought and cut it, it smelled like a common button mushroom.
I also have attached a latest image of its gills hope it helps in identifying it.

That is certainly a huge one my friend.
!PIZZA !LUV

It was actually very big and weighed around 500 grams. Thank You! :)

Thank you bhai!😊🙏🏼

Good night my friend. You shared some really beautiful mushroom pictures, thank you for sharing♥️

Thank you for appreciating it friend!😊🙏🏼

You're welcome my good friends♥️

That's huge, so I used google lens and the result showing in here is that it is a giant puffball and that it is edible. But of course, it's not a deep research, I just merely share what was the result in google lens and so I am not sure if this pretty while mushroom is really edible. Anyways, this one looks so massive, and it's pretty 🤩✨.

Although the cap looks a lot like a giant puffball, I don't think it's a puffball mushroom because according to an article on wildfooduk.com, puffballs are typically twice that size and also lack a stem. But my discovery😅 had a thick stem. By the way, today another user has identified it, according to him it is a horse mushroom and when I checked, yes it looks very similar to it. However, there is still doubt on whether this mushroom is edible. but it undoubtedly looks pretty! 😍 Thank you for appreciating it and also for searching about!😊💚

It looks like the horse mushroom; you can check and compare the ID. It belongs to the family of Agaricus. It is hard to tell if I can't see the gills, but if they are, then it is edible. Be very careful of the yellow stainer, and the smell is unpleasant. To check; scratch the skin, and if it turns yellow, then it is the imposter. I would do that before picking them next time. 😊💗

Idk how to even compare the IDs of mushrooms. However it looks exactly like the horse mushroom. There was no yellow stain, I also scratched its skin but it did not turn yellow.
I've attached images of its gills. Now can you tell whether it is edible or not? @theworldaroundme

Unfortunately, I cannot tell; there are lots of factors to consider in identifying mushrooms, and looking just at the photos is not enough for me to tell. There are poisonous counterparts, and in this type, I can only tell how the gill is attached to the stem. Like the poisonous Entoloma, the look is very similar to the one you have, but the gills are notched, with some gills being free, which means some are slightly attached to the stem. While the edible horse mushroom gills are all free (not attached to the stem). So maybe start learning about ID; how gills are attached to the stem; it is one of the very important skills in identifying the mushroom. You'll be confident eating them when you have identified them 100% correctly. Apart from that, consider the characteristics of the cap, stem, and spore print, also smell, and location. Know their poisonous lookalikes and compare. 😊

possibly macro mushroom.😊

According to your study, this is not even the horse mushroom because this one's gills are not free to the stem. and the article on that site is even more confusing, they showed 9 different types of gills... I guess I must study more about identifying mushrooms before even thinking of eating any unknown species. Thank you for this brief info about all this. 😊🙏

You are very welcome; I am very impressed you looked at the link. It is confusing at first, but it gets easier. 😊💗
