Very much appreciated!!!
Same here, I love languages, and love learning new languages as well. I don’t speak as many as fluent as I want yet, but working on that :-)
Yes indeed, English is quite a huge language, it’s about 2-3 times as big as Dutch, vocabulary wise. And funny enough, sometimes there are different words in Dutch that all have only one corresponding word in English. But as you say, biased in certain areas of life…

Sort:

I also love learning languages, and I learn them quickly when I put my focus on them. I feel stunted because I don't speak at least 10 languages fluently yet...lol!

The example that you give of several Dutch words corresponding only one English word is because these are areas of differing levels of meaning for the speakers. In Dutch, there can be many nuanced words to describe one area of life. But in English, where this area of life is not as important, they gloss over it with a single word. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Yes indeed, different focus, different words :-) Is it the Inuit that have like 20 different words for snow? And in Zimbabwe they have like 1 maybe :-D

Yeppers, you've got the principle exactly. That's also fascinating to me when I'm studying a language, as I see what part of life holds the most significance. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Indeed, the whole Sócio-cultural thing behind it all!
Language is so incredibly complex and powerful in our lives and our society!

Yeppers, you got it! Absolutely, very much so, and it can also limit us as well, because our language defines the parameters of our understanding, and as such even language itself could be used as a means to control. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

In many ways, our language controls us. And towards ourselves, and to and from others! Most definitely!

It's pretty wild to consider. You don't see it as clearly until you speak more than one language, and you start to actually analyze what the words that you use actually mean! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Indeed, and the meaning, and the feeling they convey. Two words that describe the same thing, but communicate a different feeling, which then shifts your mood accordingly. Scary in a way!
