Blinding Lights

in Reflectionslast year

As we are all sharing a hotel room, what better opportunity to continue attempting to meet one of my resolutions of reducing night snacking by going to bed earlier more often. I don't do this normally because I wake up a few hours later and can't get back to sleep.

I went to bed at 2330

IMG20240105195454.jpg

I woke up at 215

It is now 430. Brilliant. It seems my body believes going to bed early is a nap, not a night sleep. I will likely fall asleep at 600 and have to get up at 800 anyway.

This hasn't been the greatest week ever.

And on top of all of the work we are falling rapidly behind in, it looks like the one coming is going to include a lot of fighting with the heating company and the insurance company. None of this has been out fault, yet par for the course is, we will pay the price.

Disappointed.

Well, that is how I feel at 430 in the morning at least, and will likely feel for a while. But, feelings don't really help deal with the situation, so I just have to suck them up and get on with what needs to be done. I feel more sorry for my wife, as she will be the one to have a lot of the conversations with the various groups, as it will be done in Finnish.

In a hotel, but no holiday.

It is kind of strange to be in a hotel in our home city, which is a first for any of us. It is almost surreal, as the unfamiliar hotel gives the feeling of being away, but everything else is familiar. For instance today, we drove home to check on the house, picked up laundry to wash at in-laws and went to out local supermarket to pick up some foods for Smallsteps to have for evening meal before bed. Tomorrow we will visit my wife's sister.

It is bizarre, as it is so normal, but also feels different.

I also had an eye test to order new glasses, which will be my first new pair in 7 years. My current glasses are older than Smallsteps, and it wasn't until the optician did the fitting that I realized how much my vision has changed. When he handed me a piece of paper while I was wearing the new prescription setting, I missed grabbing it by about half a foot.

I will get the new glasses in about 3 weeks.

Because they had a deal on, I also ordered prescription sunglasses, my first pair ever. Up until now, it is either have a headache from the sun, or a headache from not being able to see well enough. The third option is to wear a very, very ugly clip on sunglasses thing, that I can only wear while driving, as they look so incredibly bad.

Free testing. 50% off the prescription lenses. 50% off everything for the sunglasses. €900 all up.

Great.

There were quite a few measurements taken to ensure the lenses will be cut correctly with the focus points in the right spots, so I am unsure how that would work buying them from an online provider. Next time I might try though.

I wish I could get laser surgery and be done with it, but as one of the "lucky" few with keratoconus, that is not an option. It has hopefully stopped progressing, but if it does continue, I will have to have some surgery where they harden the cells in the cornea, or have a cornea transplant.

Double great.

However, I am looking forward to crisper vision. When adjusted, it felt like I was looking at things in high-definition again. Also, I changed the style of the frames quite a lot, opting for a half rim, which feels lighter on my face. I have been wearing thick, black frames since my first pair in 2015.

A change is as good as a holiday.

Well, we have changed to a hotel, when does the holiday feeling begin? Fair play though, it has been a nice change of scenery and I think it has been good for the family to get a little distance away from the house complications for some time.

Come Monday, we are going to have to dive back in, but handle it from other strange places. My wife will work from her parent's place, me from the local library, and Smallsteps will start back at school for the first time in 2024, as well as have her first dance practice for the year, and on Tuesday, her first ever piano lesson.

It would be easier with a home base.

However, we are only in the hotel until Monday, after which, we don't know where we will be living.

Makes it easy to sleep.

But with that, I think I will close my eyes for a few minutes and see if I will get an early morning nap going, before having to wake up again.

At least, there is a hotel breakfast waiting.

It's not that unusual to wake up for a bit when you're doing the big main phase sleep thing but you generally want to stay in bed and pretend to be asleep/chill and NOT get up (unless bathroom break needed) or grab your phone and start scrolling/typing as that will wake you up.

other safe option is "bedroom sports" as one of my friends called it XD

The third option is to wear a very, very ugly clip on sunglasses thing

I remember some of the older people I know wearing these flipped up when indoors/unneeded and sauntering around like it was cool.

I wish I could get laser surgery and be done with it

I remember looking into it and being told (by the optometrist) that I should do it before 40 as apparently it's not really worth it afterwards. Missed the boat on that one but I'm too much of a coward for that anyway. And then my eyes shifted (which is from memory why they said do it before 40) and now apparently I have better than 20/20 with my current contacts prescription XD

Yay for crispier vision though, always helpful :D And sounds like there's some good things out of the mound of nonsense. Hopefully they'll hurry the hell up and get on with the repairs.

freaking insurance companies

Would an Airbnb be better than a hotel? I do hope your heater problems are fixed soon. As for the lasik, have you looked at Implantable contact lens (ICL) surgery? I've heard it is an option for those not qualified for lasik.

AirBnB might be better later, but it was Friday evening and the insurance company said hotel for the weekend. It is actually about the same Price though. If it is for a longer time however, we will need to cook.

I haven't heard of implantable contacts. Not sure if I am suitable for those either, as the cornea thins and thickens weirdly. Will check it out though. Eye stuff is not my favorite.

I will get the new glasses in about 3 weeks.

My neighbour thinks that I should get either new glasses or a laser surgery. I keep delaying because it is expensive and my current glasses still work well enough in my opinion. Also I am afraid of the surgery... But now when I have bought all Berserk manga I might start saving for new glasses. Or maybe Hive will climb to the moon soon. That would help as well.

However, I am looking forward to crisper vision. When adjusted, it felt like I was looking at things in high-definition again.

I remember when I got my first glasses(?) I was surprised that planking on the walls had nails. I did not see them before.

Glasses are more expensive than they should be in my opinion. But, there is very high demand here, as most people have glasses.

My vision isn't that bad... I think.

The same could be said about funeral services. My neighbour some time ago said that her friend paid near 4k for that... That is insane. Who could afford to die with prices like that?

I have never gone beyond the fourth row, but at 20 centimetres from the paper, I can easily outline and differentiate exact line junctions. I had no problems with architectural or technical.

This is a very unusual experience of living in a hotel. People usually spend pleasant days there. I hope you didn’t dream too much about your future holiday in hotels last year.

Mostly having nightmares about dealing with all of this nonsense.

However, we are only in the hotel until Monday, after which, we don't know where we will be living.

Dear @tarazkp !

Is your family staying in a hotel because the heating boiler at your house is broken?😧

No. The house is warm now, but the pipes are frozen and cracked in the basement, so there is no water.

The accident of not having water in the house in winter is very difficult for humans!!

I hope your house gets back to normal quickly!

I don't eat snacks after 7pm.

Until about 8pm at which time coffee and snacks call seductively...and I respond. I do a lot of fasting though and that makes up for it. (I fast when I'm asleep.)

I just need to sleep 15 hours a day, work eight, and keep my eating down to an hour for lunch and I will be fine.

One can eat a lot in an hour.

Looking at the image of Smallsteps peering through the glass reminded me of the hours I spent in contemplation. What questions is Smallsteps asking himself as he basks in the colourful lights....

Today there are wonderful techniques to get the lenses we want and the ones that suit our needs. I don't usually get headaches, but if I find myself in brightly lit places it affects me, my eyes don't have irises, and consequently I can't graduate the light input, so I use lenses that are self-degrading and self-tinting, and I avoid high emission sources. My lenses use a pair of R10 batteries, perfectly simulated, yet not heavy. Well, I've been wearing glasses since I was 4 years old, I don't know what it would be like to be without them…

One thing I have noticed about sleeping late for me is that I wake up early than when I sleep early. Reason for this is still unknown to me.

Happy new year once again

I think one of the hardest things I did was cut out the midnight snack. It got ridiculous at one point, it moved from toast, to beans on toast, or fried egg, or sausage sandwiches. After a few months of it, I gained a fair bit of weight, and also my body got so used to it that I felt like I was starving myself by stopping. 2 years on, and I only eat up until 9 o'clock, and I feel way better for it. The first few weeks are tough, but the habit kicks in then and everything goes back to normal.

I've never had a pair of prescription shades, but I'd like to get some. Recently got a new pair of glasses myself, after about 4 years, and my sight hasn't changed all that much, I mainly needed new ones because the arms broke off the old pair and were held together with sellotape, so I couldn't really go outside wearing them.

A friend of mine has those large shade things he wears over his normal glasses. They're kind of like goggles. I don't blame you for not wanting them. They're odd and give off Bladerunner reject vibes haha

I think the reason why everything is feeling normal is because the hotel is closer to your house but there will always be a difference which means that you will escape from home chores aside from the fact that you went home for laundry and all…

I'm sorry that you have to go through all of this. It's too bad lawyers are so expensive. It almost might be better to get some kind of advocate to deal with all of the logistics for you. They are going to charge you so much that it would probably be cheaper just to pay the heating company.

Indeed, you all have been experiencing a strange situation. I hope it will be fixed asap.

Hello, how are you, greetings from Venezuela.
I found your post interesting. I hope you can rest and solve your problems, especially the one you have with your eyesight. I thought it was great that you use this social network to publish what you experience every day. I covert your adventure. Why won't somebody try these kind of stuffs sometimes! It's refreshing and offers relaxation. We are so tied to home chores over here that we can't even imagine spending a little time out in a hotel likewise.
