Functional roads are very useful indeed, though it also depends on how one chooses to live. It is possible to live a very fulfilling life without roads at all, though that is not what most people would choose. The intentional community where I live in the jungle is at the end of a long car-killing dirt-and-rock road, and while care must be taken when driving on it, and not all cars can drive on it, I'm grateful that it's that way because it gives us a degree of protection from unwanted attention.
