I assume most of you who read this article already have this coin. It's a common coin. But it did lead me to some reflection.
Beowulf and Grendel's mother. English speakers know this legend. Most. I think. A significant number of cultured people in the global west know it too. The coin is for them.
And what is the coinage on, say, African coins? Animals. Beautiful animals. Rarely anything else. Don't they have legends in Africa? Rumours? Epics? Fables? I'm sure they do. Only certain African nations and tribes know them.
Are these "African" coins meant for Africans? No, they're not. They're for people from the global west - Europeans, Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders... Africans don't even know that their countries formally issue these coins. And they probably have other things to worry about than buying them.
These wheels are technically coins. But apparently they never made it into countries where they are formal tender.
Once upon a time, rulers jealously guarded the right to mint coins. Today, these coins are minted by states. But African states sell that right to European companies. Business as usual. But there's nothing wrong with business as such.
The current situation only shows who is rich and who is poor. When will Africa be rich too? When the ordinary African worker or civil servant starts buying coins minted by African companies and bearing the likenesses of African heroes. I hope these coins are not minted for European countries. That would mean that Europe has become poorer.
Australia, Canada and New Zealand also have nature motifs on their coins. However, I don't recall any European country having them. I guess we don't have many endemic animals here anymore. Just a few plants. Plants are not very cool on coins.
China mints investment coins with pandas and a typical temple. European or American companies have nothing to do with it. It's Chinese state promotion. Good publicity.
I remember a Cambodian tiger. Armenian coins. With a piece of the Ark and Mount Ararat. And I don't know what else. Can you help me? Which countries still mint investment coins? What is depicted on them?
What about India? Muslim countries? Oil powers? Those should just have calligraphy or ornaments. There's a lot I don't know. But I'll try to find out.

Předpokládám, že většina z vás, kteří čtou tento článek, již tuto minci má. Je to běžná mince. Přesto mě přivedla k určitému zamyšlení.
Anglicky hovořící tuto legendu nejspíš znají. Většinou. Myslím. Zná ji i značná část kulturních lidí na globálním Západě. Pro ně je určena tato mince.
A jaká je ražba například afrických mincí? Zvířata. Krásná zvířata. Málokdy něco jiného. Copak v Africe nemají legendy? Pověsti? Eposy? Báje? Určitě ano. Znají je jen některé africké národy a kmeny.
Jsou tyto „africké“ mince určeny pro Afričany? Ne, nejsou. Jsou určeny lidem z globálního Západu - Evropanům, Američanům, Kanaďanům, Australanům, Novozélanďanům... Afričané ani nevědí, že jejich země tyto mince oficiálně vydávají. A pravděpodobně mají jiné starosti než si je kupovat.
Tato kola jsou technicky mince. Zřejmě se však nikdy nedostaly do zemí, kde jsou oficiálním platidlem.
Kdysi dávno si panovníci žárlivě střežili právo razit mince. Dnes tyto mince razí státy. Africké státy však toto právo prodávají evropským společnostem. Byznys jako obvykle. Na podnikání jako takovém však není nic špatného.
Současná situace pouze ukazuje, kdo je bohatý a kdo chudý. Kdy bude i Afrika bohatá? Až si obyčejný africký dělník nebo úředník začne kupovat mince ražené africkými společnostmi a s podobiznami afrických hrdinů. Doufám, že tyto mince nebudou raženy pro evropské země. To by znamenalo, že Evropa zchudla.
Přírodní motivy mají na svých mincích také Austrálie, Kanada a Nový Zéland. Nevzpomínám si však, že by je měla nějaká evropská země. Myslím, že u nás už mnoho endemických zvířat nemáme. Jen pár rostlin. Rostliny nejsou na mincích příliš cool.
Čína razí investiční mince s pandami a typickým chrámem. Evropské nebo americké společnosti s tím nemají nic společného. Je to čínská státní propagace. Dobrá propagace.
Vzpomínám si na kambodžského tygra. Arménské mince. S kouskem archy a hory Ararat. A nevím, co ještě. Můžete mi pomoci? Které země ještě razí investiční mince? Co je na nich vyobrazeno?
A co Indie? Muslimské země? Ropné velmoci? Ty by měly mít jen kaligrafii nebo ornamenty. Je toho hodně, co nevím. Ale pokusím se to zjistit.
Život je krásný, když má člověk co hledat a co se dozvědět!
