Dundee winter walk in the sunshine

in Wednesday Walklast year

Hello Hello Hivians

Today we are visiting the city of Dundee in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

All these pictures are taken with my smartphone camera. I did take lots of pictures with my camera but those are on my memory card and are for another day!

Wrap up warm and let's go!

Dundee Winter Walk in Sunshine (1).png

image.png

Dundee is the fourth-largest city in Scotland with a population of around 150k.

It lies within the eastern central Lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, which feeds into the North Sea.

We though are just having a wee wander along some streets for our walk.

image.png

When the sky is blue, the older buildings shine with beauty.

image.png

We tend to forget the history, but these buildings are older than any human.

image.png

Do they make buildings to last anymore? I am not so sure!

image.png

I love the triangular look of that picture, it does remind me of New York.

image.png

Can you guess what that tram car is used for?
Answer at the bottom!
image.png

So we are in the centre of Dundee and the beautiful building that you are about to see is The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum

image.png

Dundee showing the River Tay and the museum in the city centre. Screenshot from my pinmapple account.

image.png

It is quite a magnificent building.

image.png

It was built in the Gothic style.

image.png

It has turrets, round windows the whole shabang!

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

Admission should you wish to go is free.

image.png

image.png

There are actually 8 galleries inside the art museum.

image.png

Outside the museum is a character!
image.png
image.png

Oor Wullie! There he is, in all his glory!

image.png

Oor Wullie (English: Our Willie) is a Scottish comic strip published in the D.C. Thomson newspaper The Sunday Post. It features a character called Wullie; Wullie is a Scots nickname for boys named William, equivalent to Willie. His trademarks are spiky hair, dungarees and an upturned bucket, which he uses as a seat: most strips since early 1937 begin and end with a single panel of Wullie sitting on his bucket. The earliest strips, with little dialogue, ended with Wullie complaining (e.g., "I nivver get ony fun roond here!"). The artistic style settled down by 1940 and has changed little since. A frequent tagline reads, "Oor Wullie! Your Wullie! A'body's Wullie!" (Our Willie! Your Willie! Everybody's Willie!).

source

image.png

Wee boys will be wee boys and run from girls!

image.png

Do you see his catapult. Or do you call them slingshots?

image.png

A good old fashioned leather satchel!

Did you have one as a kid?

image.png

A side view of oor Wullie is a great way to see his spiky hair. Remember this comic strip is 80 years old, it shows that trendy hairstyles have been in vogue for almost a 100 years!

There is his bucket or pail which was his seat!

I am sure you have sat on one too?

image.png

image.png

Another fascade of the gallery.

image.png

image.png

image.png

Do you know who the statue is?

image.png

We shall see in a wee minute.

image.png

Robert Burns or Rabbie Burns, one of the world's greatest poets, and Scotland's national poet.

image.png

I am pretty sure that this was the original DC Thomson newspaper offices.

image.png

Being a city, Dundee has a great bus system although the colour was unusual!

image.png

After a spot of walking and shopping, you need to have a wee bit of nosh!

image.png

When we lived in America, the only fast food place I would eat at was Taco Bell.

image.png

I loved the hot Fire sauce and that they used Pinto beans!

image.png

Now however I find out the sauce is pretty weak and they don't use pinto beans anymore!

image.png

This was a big disappointment to be honest. Although the Quesadilla was fine enough.

image.png

Oh look a dragon!

image.png

There you see that back end of that tram car, which was aptly called The Auld Tram. Auld being Scottish for old and it was a wee cafe takeaway!

image.png

There is a local legend about the dragon and the Nine Maidens of Pitempten is one of the most enduring.

A carved Pict symbol stone 400 A.D. to 850 A.D, near Bridgefoot, Angus, Scotland marks the spot where the dragon was allegedly slain. The legend states that the farmer at Pitempton had nine daughters, and one day he sent one to the well for water. When she did not return, he sent another, and so on until all nine were missing.

When he investigated he found their mangled remains along with a great serpent or dragon. On rousing the countryside, a young man named Martin, lover of one of his daughters, attacked the dragon and eventually slew it.

Thanks for taking us to this photographic tour. The buildings look somewhat old stylised.

The word queue is ironic.
It's just q with a bunch of silent letters waiting in line.

The architecture is just amazing. I can't say as though I have ever seen a Taco Bell quite like that! At least not around where I live. I'm sure in the big city it is pretty common to see them like that. Most of them around where I live are stand alone. Back in the day, the buildings even had the old mission style architecture. This looks like it was a wonderful walk!

Ah yes stand alone buildings, well in the retail parks we have out of town that is where the fast food places are stand alone. Yeah the architecture as a kid you are used to it, I think it is only as we age do we really appreciate the amazing architecture.

That makes sense I guess. Taco Bell is my wife's favorite as well. They have a few things I enjoy, but I'd honestly rather have a burger from Wendy's if I was given the choice!

They did have a Wendy's we tried in the UK, but it had not crossed the Atlantic well, a bit like KFC here does not do mashed potatoes and gravy!

What! That's kind of pointless a KFC without mashed potatoes and gravy. Believe it or not, over here in the states we have KFC's that have all you can eat buffets. They aren't as common as they used to be, but they are still around here and there. Next time you make it to the states, try a "Double Stack" from Wendy's. In my opinion it's the perfect representation of an American burger, the ratio of condiments to cheese to pickle to onion is just perfect.

Tickety Boos! I knew someone who had a plaque put up in the bar there for being a regular for many many years!

Did you really! Helped their profits no end I am sure!

Oh I bet so. A hardened drinker of a man he was. There are some cracking pubs up the Dee

How are you dear friend @tengolotodo good morning
I love the architecture and the fronts of the period buildings, without a doubt, some of these buildings are older than the inhabitants there.

Regarding your question. I think it is used to sell espresso coffee.

Beautiful photographs, I appreciate that you shared this Wednesday walking experience.
have a great morning

Hehe yes it does sell coffee.
Thanks my friend @jlufer I hope you are having a great day, and I shall be popping over to see you in a wee bit.

That is such a nice walk ED, do they still use the tram nowadays there?
I don't think I might want to enter and enjoy what the museum has inside, since you can already see the amazing building for free from the outside.
!LUV !PIZZA

@ekavieka sent you LUV 🙂 (2/5)

Made with LUV by crrdlx

Thanks Eka, the only thing the tram is used for is to sell coffees. The system stopped working many years ago.

I just loved seeing all the beautiful architecture around the city. The comic book kid is a hoot! I did have a slingshot as a young girl and would compete with my brothers you were not so good with their aim. lol
Also, I have always been intrigued by the legends about dragons.

Me too I love the architecture.
Ah so you had a slingshot, so you might have more like Minnie Minx who had a catapult and was a tearaway too lol

Beautiful blue skies and such cool architecture I did love my visits there

Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)

Thanks so much Jay, blue skies really makes older architecture shine!

Manually curated by ewkaw from the @qurator Team. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much 😁

I seem to have trouble even understanding written Scottish :) thank goodness Wullie's explanation is translated into standard English ;)

lol Ah yes the various dialects of English 🤣

Yes I never knew what the deal was with the dragon until the last time we were there, 9 missing daughters before he goes looking, not exactly Dad of the year 🤣

Wow what a lovely day! Thank you for bringing us along on this walk. If I don't get to travel to Europe, at least I got to see Dundee City albeit virtually LOL. :D I love museums. That is such a classic one. Love the old buildings. They do look more durable than modern ones being built nowadays. Happy #thankfulThursday!

Thank you and yes they don't build them like that anymore!

Better

Those are great shots BD. I love the story of Willie and his spiky hair like you rightly mentioned didn't even started from him.

And the story of the dragon, I love it too. These are all bedtime stories and it would be nice to listen to my BD tell me more.

I basically loved all the shots and as for the tram car I think it is a business car but I don't know what they might be selling, could or be cakes?

That is me taking a wild guess

I read another one of your Wednesday walks for the Dreem community.

Enjoy them to be sure, especially your Scottish accent.

Do they make buildings like you have there anymore? Nope. Living in Canada I always like looking at all those neat European buildings with history and wish we had it here. Alas we do not.

Looking at the Scottish sights, especially the dragon and Robbie Burns, make me hopeful that someday I'll get to Scotland and see where my ancestors came from (both my Great Grandfathers emigrated from there). Dunfermline looks possible (close to everything) but Thurso looks like its pretty far from the main parts of Scotland.

If you are ever travelling and sending pictures from there tag me in your Wednesday walk 🙂

Otherwise enjoy the winter sunshine. I don't know about where you are but here in Abbotsford, BC, Canada we see drizzle and rain pretty much all winter. When we actually see sun seize the day! ---quick--- before the rain sets in again 😉

Thanks for posting
