Steamed Rice Noodles also called as "Idiyappam" at my place

in Plant Power (Vegan)4 days ago

Greetings dear Plant power vegans community and my other Hiveans. Hope you enjoyed your weekend. For me, the weekend has passed so quickly because for the last 15 days, Iam occupied with tedious jobs.

Something that makes me happy is my kitchen, especially when its spick and span. So, here I am for the contest hosted by the @qurator community for the Hive Top Chef competition. For more details click on to this link

This recipe is a real nostalgia, a traditional steemed recipe right from my grandma's time enjoyed by people of all age group. This is called Idiyappam in local language. But then, during my childhood I saw her doing all kinds of cooking in earthern stove as it was difficult to get gas connection in that remote village. Trust me, thise recipes in earthern stove had a special flavour.

So why wait? Shall we go ahead friends. To make this item you need an Idiyappam maker with handle. Here, it is easily available in marker. Because in most parts of South India people prefer this.

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

  1. Rice flour - 1 glass
  2. Salt - as required
  3. Cooking Oil - 1 tsp
  4. Water - 3 glass

Sweet Side dish

  1. Coconut - 1/2 of 1 large coconutl
  2. Warm water - 1/2 cups
  3. Salt - a pinch
  4. Sugar - as per your taste.

STEP - 1

Take the required amount of rice flour and mix the salt with it. Now keep it aside while placing the water on stove to boil.

STEP - 2

Once the water starts to boil, reduce the flame and start pouring the hot water, little by little into the rice flour until it starts to form soft lunps. Now mix these lumps to form a soft dough. Keep it aside for 5 minutes.

STEP - 3

This is the Idiyappam Maker and the steamer used to make this recipe

Now, make oval balls out of the rice flour and place it in the Idiyappam Maker. And squeeze them into the vessel designed for this and steem it. If you do not have this particular vessel, squeeze in a plantain leaf and steam it.

Once done, keep it in the steamer for about 5 to 8 minutes in high flame. Gradually reduce the flame, and steam it for another 8 minutes.

Ready to be served hot hot..... with coconut milk.

STEP - 4

For Coconut milk, just add the required amount of warm water and keep aside for 10 minutes. Later squeeze them by hand and remove the milk or beat it on a mixer and extract the coconut milk using a strainer. Add a pinch of salt.

How to eat ?
Take Idiyappam in a plate, pour some coconut milk to it so that it geta immersed in it and add sugar as per your taste.

Ready to taste, here it is

Note : This goes well with Potato curry and chick peas curry as well. (for vegans)

Thankyou for your time and patience. Hope you enjoyed my traditional recipe. All photos were captured from my kitchen while cooking this recipe.

Have a wonderful day ahead !!!

In Indonesia we call it Putu, which is exactly what your dish is, made from rice flour and shaped like noodles in a similar mold. It must be enjoyed with coconut milk, but we usually add pieces of jackfruit or banana to the coconut milk.

A sweet treat that we usually prepare for dessert at home!. It's great that we have such similar dishes in this part of the country lain❤️

Nice to know about putu. The same puttu we have here and is called as steamed cake but not in noddles form, its just the rice flour put in a lengthy puttu maker and kept in steamer.
Very true we have so mamy foods in common irrespective of their name.

Oh, this sounds flavorful. I have never tasted other Indian foods except SHAWARMA, which is also my favorite, especially when it has plenty of potatoes in it. I love it paired with cola. Thanks for sharing your unique recipe.😊
