What's the best thing about living in your country?
You probably can tell from my cover image that I live in Singapore. Singapore is well known for many good stuff as well as some not so good stuff, but having lived here for more than three decades, in my view, the best thing would be the safety and security here.
Singapore is relatively safe and secure country, and the crime rate is low. There are even experiences where people have left laptops and other valuables in Starbucks, and they were still there after they returned hours later. Of course, low crime does not mean no crime, so one probably still has to exercise common sense and keep an eye on one's valuables. After all, it's almost impossible for anywhere in the world to be 100% safe.
In this troubled world, where more and more areas are experiencing unrest or conflicts, I feel that having the peace of mind is priceless. Some people might view Singapore's strengths as their level of development, food paradise, garden city, their infrastructure, or even their weather, but without the basic foundation of safety and security, all these strengths would count for nothing.
Of course, this doesn't happen by chance and safety and security is something we don't take for granted. We have our uniformed groups such as police and military, being on alert 24/7, and all men also have to go through 2 years of military training around the age of 18. It's really the tightly knit social fabric and the collective action in ensuring we enjoy the valuable peace for as long as possible.
So for me, having the peace of mind on safety and security is the best thing about living in Singapore!
Anyway, the nation is celebrating it's National Day, our 59th birthday, in a months' time! Looking forward to seeing those aerial displays like these as well as fireworks!
