We recently celebrated the day of love and friendship. I had a wonderful experience with my partner, although I had not planned it. Before I met my current partner, I spent a long period of time in solitude, a time I cherished. Unlike many who fear loneliness, for me it was quite the opposite. Being alone emotionally was a valuable opportunity to explore who I am and learn to enjoy my own company.
Loving oneself involves the ability to take care of oneself and consider oneself to the best of one's ability. For many, this notion is unclear, but spending time alone is an invaluable opportunity and the first step towards self-love. It is about exploring oneself, recognizing oneself and establishing methods to pamper oneself and feel good. Enjoying one's own company involves talking to oneself, reflecting on the past in order to project the future and thus improve as a person. By being your own judge, you can better focus your actions and avoid repeating mistakes. Learning to be better by working on yourself is the key to growing and loving yourself.
The ability to love and respect another person is intrinsically linked to the ability to do so with oneself. This concept encapsulates one of the great truths. Self-love is fundamental; it is the first love we must cultivate. This could be the secret to maintaining healthy relationships, for by loving ourselves, we can develop a high degree of empathy and consideration for others.
Today, while enjoying my coffee, I was reflecting on the various forms of love: the love of parents, of children, of family, of friends. However, I came to the conclusion that self-love is paramount. It is the foundation that must be present to understand love in its purest form and to have a clear understanding of this feeling that is so fundamental to the world, starting from oneself.
