Smiling In Pains

Smiling in pain, this is now the reality of most Nigerians. People are carrying the weight of unspoken struggles. The harsh reality of the unending inflation and hardship in the economy has made many become an unrelenting companion in their day-to-day life, forcing individuals to wear a mask called smile.

Nigerians have found a way to survive the hardship and challenges in the country while hoping and praying for a better tomorrow.

As December approaches and with the prices of foodstuffs skyrocketing every day in the market, I decided to buy all I would need in my kitchen for the year, apart from fresh vegetables.

I made my budget and went to the market; I was so stressed, exhausted, and tired at the prices of things. Gone are the days when I went to the market to shop and went straight to a particular shop to get what I wanted. Now I have to enter different shops (like three to four different shops) to compare prices, then go for the best deal that's a little bit lower in price.

To my dismay, the money I took to the market couldn't buy half of what was on my list. My tired is already getting tired.

There's no price-regulating body in Nigeria, so this has made every shop owner set prices arbitrarily; this is very sad and annoying.

The transportation sector is also not left out in this. The rate at which these bike men put a price on a short-distance journey is as if they want to make the money they use to buy a liter of fuel from just one person.

I just wonder when the smiles on the faces of Nigerians will become true; when will this pain and hardship cease?

You NEVER want government to try and regulate prices. It only leads to absolute chaos. Look at history in places like Russia and others who tried communist regimes. They fixed prices and it completely destroys loca business.

That being said the economic issues are absolutely affecting people and it’s tough indeed. Hopefully we can get relief on that front in terms of getting better commodities to the regions so they can lower prices naturally.

I never saw it from this perspective, I thought if the government should intervene, things would be much easier

No, sadly it does not. We need governments for some things but NOT for prices. It is also called subsidies. Subsidies destroy markets because it artificially props up certain groups or players and hurts those who don't get the subsidies. There are a lot of great people who have written about the dangers of subsidies.

A well-known example of subsidies is in America, the government subsidizes corn production. Now so much of the food is filled with pesticides and the garbage Corn Syrup as a sweetener instead of less processed things like Cane Sugar. There are lots more examples, but that is an easy one to find!

Wow 😲
This is an eye opener, thank you for sharing this. Indeed we learn everyday
