This is my post for #freewriters 2539 prompt aspect hosted by @mariannewst

A terrible thing happened on my road. My husband has a friend who does not live far from our place, on the same road. His neighbor has four German Shepherd dogs. One is very aggressive when you go by walking or on a bike. It runs up and down the fence, barking like it wants to eat you. The owner talks German to them, so I think they are trained guard dogs.

My husband's friend's wife was in her front yard when all four of the dogs got out of their fence, they attacked her and dragged her down the road and into a ditch, she is 71 years old. Someone told her husband that she was in the ditch and a dog was standing over her, the other 3 went home. He grabbed his pistol and ran down there, he pulled his pistol on the dog, he said he had it pointed at the dog's head but he could not pull the trigger.

The cops and ambulance came and they called for her to be airlifted out, the dogs mauled her face. (Those words were hard to write). This is how bad she was, we live 2 miles from a hospital and they took her to a trauma center hospital 20 miles away.

Fritz, the husband, asked the cops what would have happened if he had shot the dog and they told him he would have gone to jail. Him not the owner of the dogs. If you can not control every aspect of your dogs, you do not deserve to have a dog and if your dogs harm someone to this degree, you should be the one that goes to jail.

The police took all 4 dogs they said they would be held for 10 days to be sure they did not have rabies, after that they would be put down.

I am so sad that this happened to Margret, but I am also sad that these dogs will be killed. There is no need to train dogs to be aggressive. I have two of the friendliest dogs that can protect my home. All they need to do is bark, which they do if you are on the other side of our fence. That will keep anyone out. If you are brave enough to come in my yard, they will lick you and want to be petted.

What a terrible incident!! I feel sorry for Margret. It is a great trauma to her! Wish her a quick recovery!

If I were in Fritz's position, I would kill the dog or I would try at least!

I think I would have killed it too but you never know unless you are put in that position.
The whole thing is so sad, for her and the dogs.

I carry a gun, and it's not so much because of 2-legged problems as 4-legged ones... But bad dogs are often the product of bad owners. Dogs that attack people who were minding there own business are probably beyond hope of re-training, unfortunately.

I had to shoot a dog once, it was very hard to do. I did it because the dog was hit by a car and I knew it would die on the way to the vet and could not bear to see it suffering.

Wow, what an incident. So much of humanity captured here. The dog owner who (probably) is so afraid that he has to train his dogs to be that aggressive, and at the other end of the spectrum, Fritz, who had too much compassion or empathy for the dog to kill it, even though it had hurt his wife.

Just incredible.

It is such a tragic thing to happen, I went by there today and the man was replacing his fence, I am assuming that is where the dogs broke through it. It was broken on the side next to Fritz's house where the dogs could see Margret in her yard.

I could only see the violence in it, not the humanity as you did until I read your comment, but I see what you are saying.

I think the man bought the dogs that were already trained to protect his place because he spoke German to them.

I knew a lady who only spoke German to her shepherds. She said she had to speak it because they were trained in Germany and that was the only language they understood. I am not sure if that is the case here but I can not think of another reason why someone would not speak English. The man speaks English.

Thank you for commenting.

Yeah, unfortunately violence is an aspect of humanity too.

I wanted to mention that I enjoyed your writing in this piece. Very clear, concise, and well organized, almost like reading a newspaper report. Nice job.

Thank you, but I am not a reporter or writer, I only wrote what happened.
