Funs' Big Day: A Rollercoaster of Emotions

The day finally arrived.

The day my French Bulldog, Funs, was going in for surgery.

In my blog of the 25th of April, I mentioned a lump on his testicles that we had checked by the vet.

The news wasn't good: it was a cancerous tumor, and it was active.

Removal of this small lump was necessary.

The vet explained that due to the location, a castration would also be performed to ensure all cancerous cells were removed.

A feeling of unease tore at me.

It wasn't a simple surgery, and the consent forms with risks from anesthesia and complications added to my worry.

The Waiting Game

The morning dragged.

Between school runs and stolen glances at the clock, the hours ticked by excruciatingly slow.

Finally, at 1:00 pm, I was home, prepping Funs.

No food or water since midnight – a sober start for his surgery.

The car ride to the vet wasn't his usual joyful one.

In the waiting room, he sat glumly, facing the exit.

It was obvious that this journey was not giving him much joy.

After a quick intake, I said goodbye, my heart heavy but filled with trust in the vet's expertise.

At 1:35 pm, Funs' surgery, estimated at 45 minutes, began.

The wait was agonizing.

Time crawled.

Relief and a New Routine

Finally, at 5:45 pm, the vet called.

The procedure went well! I could pick Funs up within 45 minutes.

Relief washed over me.

They discussed aftercare – two medications (one for pain and inflammation, the other stronger for post-surgery discomfort).

We also scheduled a follow-up appointment in 13 days to check the wound, remove stitches, and get the biopsy results.

Fingers crossed for benign!

Homeward Bound – A New Look and a Big Bill

By 6:30 pm, the three of us were at the vet, eager to bring our buddy home.

The vet explained wound care, emphasizing cleanliness (a challenge we were determined to overcome).

I was initially shocked by the size of the incision – double what I expected.

For such a small dog, it seemed like a major surgery.

The second shock came with the bill: €559.92.

Ouch! Here's hoping this investment significantly extends Funs' life and brings us many more joyful years together.

It's a sacrifice I wouldn't hesitate to make again for my furry friend.

Recovery and Hope

With a mix of amusement and pity, I watched Funs waddle to the car in his "Medical Pet Shirt."

Groggy from anesthesia and clearly disliking the shirt, he inched forward.

Its purpose: to prevent him from licking his wound and ensure proper healing.

At home, I'd prepared a quiet, warm, and comfortable space.

He initially struggled to find a suitable resting spot, even rejecting his usual dog bed!

Eventually, his own large pillow won, and he drifted off to sleep.

The worst is (hopefully) behind us.

Right now, hoping and praying is all we can do now for our little buddy to get better soon.

To many more thrilling adventures, loving, funny moments and fewer vet visits ahead of us!
