So malaya naba talaga tayo?

Questioning Freedom

Happy Independence Day to all Filipinos! But the question is... Are we truly free?

The Philippine Independence Day declared by Aguinaldo on June 12, 1898, marked our freedom from Spanish colonization. What puzzles me is why this is our Independence Day when we only switched rulers.

It's like a bird in a pet shop that's sold but isn't really free because it's still confined to a cage in its new owner's house.

The real day we became free from colonization was on July 4, 1946. This is also the Original Date of the celebration of Independence Day that was changed to honor Emilio Aguinaldo for his contributions to the nation.

So are we truly free?

Yes, we are indeed free. We have our own government that governs us. Some may say, "Our country is just a puppet," whether we're sucking up to other countries or not, we're still free.

Every Filipino now enjoys so many rights that our ancestors didn't experience. I often hear my grandfather's stories how difficult life was back then.

It's like their only option was to survive each day because no matter how hard they worked, there were limitations to what they could achieve in life, and they were treated as second-class citizens.

Even if you were diligent in your work or business, it wasn't easy to prosper because the policies were not favorable to us Filipinos.

But now, we are free. Before, other countries looked down on us, but now, it's fellow Filipinos who look down on their own kind.

Foreign countries still have influence in our lives, but that's our choice, and we're the ones embracing it.

Hahaha! :)
