We visited my wife's family for diner and afterwards, we enjoyed a game of Settlers of Catan. If you've never played the game you should, it's very fun with a very good mix of chance and skill.
The goal of the game is to get to 10 points, starting the game with two settlements (2 points) and two roads attached, each additional settlement worth one point. Settlements can be upgraded to cities, worth 2 points. There are also prizes for "largest army" and "longest road" worth 2 points each. The dice is rolled to see what produce is generated, depending on where your settlements/cities are located, determines how much material you get. This material can be used to build roads, settlements, upgrade to city, or a development card. It's competitive, since there are only so many resources and so much room on the board. A three-player game can get crowded and a four player game is VERY crowded.
The numbers on the board are dice rolls and statistically (with two dice) the numbers six and eight are rolled the most. Besides seven which is rolled the most, which has it's own rules. Placing settlements on good numbers helps gain resources, but having the right combination of resources is key to winning.
If a seven is rolled, every player with eight or more cards in their hands must discard half of them, the player moves the "robber" on to one of the fields and that resource is inactive until the robber is moved. The player who rolled seven also gets to steal one random resource from one of the players on that field.
There's all sorts of interesting twists to the game, like the ability to trade 4:1 with the bank for any resource, but building on a harbor allows 3:1 or 2:1 with a specified resource. Sometimes this advantage can win the game.
You can also trade resources with your opponents each turn (Do you have any wood for sale? What are you offering?), so players who are behind are still relevant to the game.
Resource cards can earn points with point cards, or soldiers (which when played is like rolling a seven) and with at least three solders played wins 2 extra points for "largest army". There's also road builder for 2 free road segments, and monopoly card where you can demand everyone's resource of your choice and "year of plenty" where you get two free resources of your choice that turn. I like resource cards, they can really help especially late in the game.
