Like many other games of its kind, StarCraft is packaged with a series of pre-made combat missions for players to play against the computer. These series typically begin with introductory missions and progress to more challenging battles. These campaigns are set in a time and place in a fictional universe, and the events in one battle lead to the next in the campaign. Unlike Blizzard Entertainment's first two Warcraft games, StarCraft's campaigns are not alternate stories that vary with the side the player chooses, but rather sequential parts in a single timeline. Also, the backstory for StarCraft is far more detailed and complex than any of the many other video games that came before it, including personal stories of the tragic and heroic main characters, and was created with the help of veteran authors and professional artists to give it cinematic depth. Campaigns in StarCraft are called "episodes" and are numbered, similar to the Star Wars movies.

Aside from the events in the game's missions themselves, text stories, cinematics, and descriptions provided with the game give further substance to the universe's background. Blizzard has authorized a few standalone novels, which cover events beyond the StarCraft games.

StarCraft fans have provided additional battles and historical commentary, but these are not considered canon, and are rarely covered here.

StarCraft features three races: the renegade terran humans, the noble psionic protoss, and the hideous insectoid zerg. The story covers the fortunes of these three races and their leaders, fighting for dominance in a remote region of the galaxy. Typically, the player's race gains advantages during an episode, but never completely conquers the other races.
