I recently received a damaged lamp, which was brought to me for repair and, if possible, restoration. This is an old lamp, you can tell by how worn the plastic covering the neck of the lamp is, which is brittle as if it were a potato chip.

In spite of this, it looks well preserved although it does not work, but it is nothing that can not be solved, as the owner told me that they pulled the cable once and it did not turn on again, so maybe it was a simple problem, but I had to find out.

Hace poco recibí una lámpara dañada, que me trajeron para que la reparara y, de ser posible, que la restaurara. Esta es una lámpara vieja, es algo que se aprecia por lo gastado que está el plástico que cubre el cuello de la misma, el cual está quebradizo como si de una chip de papa se tratara.

A pesar de esto, se ve bien conservada aunque no funciona, pero no es nada que no se pueda resolver, pues el dueño me comentó que tiraron del cable una vez y no encendió más, así que quizás era un problema sencillo, pero debía averiguarlo.

To detect the problem that the lamp might have, I removed the base, or protective cover. Honestly, it was the first time I had ever had such a lamp in my hands, but I dared to take on this job.

When I removed the cover, which was fastened with screws, I immediately visualized the problem. I immediately visualized the problem, but I'll tell you more about that later. I just continued disassembling all the pieces of the lower part, so I could clean it and fix it more comfortably.

Para detectar el problema que podría tener la lámpara, le quité la base, o cubierta protectora. Sinceramente era la primera vez que tenía en mis manos una lámpara así, pero me atreví a tomar este trabajo.

Al retirarle la cubierta, la cual estaba sujeta con tornillos. De inmediato visualicé el problema, pero de ello les hablaré más adelante. Solo continué desarmando todas las piezas de la parte inferior, para poder limpiarla y arreglarla con mayor comodidad.

In the photo below you can see all the parts of the base or lower part, this lamp has a partially movable arm.

En la foto de abajo pueden ver todas las piezas de la base o parte inferior, esta lámpara tiene un brazo parcialmente móvil.

The lamp arm was also loose, so I continued to disassemble all the parts.

El brazo de la lámpara también quedó suelto, así que continué desarmando todas las piezas.

I thought it would be more attached, i.e. with more screws, but no, it only had two that attached the lamp head to the arm, so I removed the two screws, thus the bulb socket came out, which was evidently very worn.

Pensé que estaría más sujeto, es decir, con más tornillos, pero no, solo tenía dos que unían la cabeza de la lámpara al brazo, así que retiré los dos tornillos, así salió el socket del bombillo, el cual evidentemente estaba muy gastado.

The internal part of the lamp I would leave for later, for now I only concentrated on sanding it to be able to apply the paint. It had many imperfections so with the sandpaper I began to file small rusty sections and imperfections that it had. At the same time, the sandpaper allowed me to leave a little rustic surface on the lamp so that the paint could fix well on this surface.

La parte interna de la lámpara la dejaría para más adelante, por ahora solo me concentré en lijarla para poder aplicarle la pintura. Tenía muchas imperfecciones así que con la lija comencé a limar pequeñas secciones oxidadas e imperfecciones que tenía. A su vez, la lija me permitió dejar una superficie un poco rústica en la lámpara para que la pintura se fijara bien en esta superficie.

Fíjense en las siguientes fotografías, cómo quedaron algunas partes de la lámpara tras el proceso de lijado.

Something I also did was to sand the washers, nuts and bolts that I had, to remove the rust, so I avoid that in the future the other parts will also rust.

Algo que también hice fue lijar las arandelas, tuercas y tornillos que tenía, para eliminar el oxido, así evito que en un futuro las otras piezas también se oxiden.

And these are all the external parts of the lamp, that is, the parts that have nothing to do with the electrical part.

Y estas son todas las piezas exteriores de la lámpara, es decir, las piezas que no tienen anda que ver con la parte eléctrica.

These pieces are the ones I have to restore, so I started with the painting process. I used an oil based matte black but I didn't want it to have brush marks so I decided to use a sponge to paint, this gives it a little more interesting finish, with some texture that makes it look nicer.

Estas piezas son las que tengo que restaurar, así que comencé con el proceso de pintura. Usé un negro mate a base de aceite pero no quería que quedara con las marcas de la brocha así que decidí usar una esponja para pintar, esto le da un acabado un poco más interesante, con cierta textura que la hace lucir más bonita.

The correct way to paint is to cut a small piece of sponge, wet it in paint and start tapping the sponge on the surface. When you separate the sponge, it creates the texture I told you about. I repeated this with all the blue pieces, until they were completely painted, it was just a matter of letting them dry for at least a day.

La manera correcta de pintar es cortando un pequeño trozo de esponja, lo humedeces en pintura y se comienza a dar pequeños golpecitos con la esponja sobre la superficie. Al separar la esponja, crea la textura que les comenté. Esto lo repetí con todas las piezas azules, hasta que quedaron completamente pintadas, solo era cuestión de dejarlas secar por al menos un día.

The arm, on the other hand, I also disassembled it to clean it well and remove all the rust.

I bought a small movable pipe to cover the metal parts, except for the connectors between the fixed parts and the movable parts. I reassembled everything and painted the exposed metal parts, that is, the ones that were not protected by the plastic tubing, with gold.

El brazo, por otra parte, también lo desarmé para limpiarlo bien y quitarle todo el óxido.

Compré una pequeña tubería móvil para cubrir las partes metálicas, a excepción de los conectores entre las partes fijas y las partes móviles. Volví a armar todo y pinté de dorado las partes metálicas descubiertas, es decir, las que no estaban protegidas por la tubería de plástico.

Now I had to work on the electrical part, but for this purpose I first decided to replace the old parts, such as wires, socket and lighters.

Speaking of cigarette lighters, the problem with the lamp not lighting was the cigarette lighter, as it was burned out. In the image below you can see the two old parts on the left and the new parts on the right, you can see the difference between one and the other.

Ahora debía trabajar en la parte eléctrica, pero para este propósito primero decidí reemplazar las piezas viejas, como cables, socket y encendedores.

Hablando de encendedores, el problema por el que la lámpara no encendía era por el encendedor, pues estaba quemado. En la imagen de abajo pueden visualizar las dos piezas viejas a la izquierda y las piezas nuevas a la derecha, se ve la diferencia entre una y otra.

I also replaced the old wires, which were brittle and toasted because of how old they were, so I started to assemble the electrical part, attaching it to the metal parts of the lamp, joining everything in the process.

También reemplacé los cables viejos, que estaban quebradizos y tostados por lo viejo que eran, así comencé a armar la parte eléctrica, sujetándola a las piezas metálicas de la lámpara, uniendo todo en el proceso.

I replaced the defective igniter and fitted the new one, hoping that this was the problem as the rest of the circuit worked when I tested it outside the lamp itself.

El encendedor defectuoso lo reemplacé y le coloqué el nuevo, con la esperanza de que este sí fuese el problema pues el resto del circuito funcionaba cuando lo probé fuera de la propia lámpara.

I fixed each piece in place and connected the electrical part to the base of the lamp, using tape, tin and silicon to fix everything in place.

I did the test and it turned on, so I closed the lamp and that was the end of this restoration and repair process.

Fijé cada pieza en su lugar y conecté la parte eléctrica en la base de la lámpara, usando cinta, estaño y silicon para dejar todo fijo en su lugar.

Hice la prueba y encendió, así que cerré la lámpara y así quedó terminado este proceso de restauración y reparación.
