just a short walk from Route 52 at Tuv in Hemsedal will bring you to the delightful and exciting rjukandefossen, the smoking falls
you can't see the falls from the parking spot but soon after you start walking you can hear it
the path is easy to follow and the suspense rose as we approached
it was the middle of june so much of the mountain snow had already melted but the water level was still high
the falls is 18 meters and empties into a narrow deep ravine
the path splits and follows the river both up and down the watercourse.
the lower section continues along the ravine and leads to some great swimming spots for those into icy water. the current is too dangerous to attempt bathing at the falls. it's thrilling enough to cross the suspension bridge over the ravine visible in the upper section of the photo.
the bridge is plenty shaky but there are rope nets on both sides so it would be very difficult to fall from
the view down into the ravine with it;s carved rock and rushing water is worth overcoming any fears and tickling in the stomach
after you stand still for a minute the bridge settles down and you can and take a few shots and will soon be breathing normally again
even when looking straight down
closer to the end of the bridge feels much safer and the view is still a thrill
the bridge is built for one person at a time, here hindavi ventured across
there are trails on the other side of the ravine as well but we wanted to try the one leading to the top of the falls. however it had been raining heavily making the rocks there too slippery to climb. that will have to be next time we pass this way
