After breaking the naval blockade of Nassau, my crew and I took refuge on my island "Gran Iguana" accompanied by a few sailors who, as fate would have it, decided to join us in our adventure.
The days went by and all we did was hide out, killing time, drinking rum and meeting women. But that fictitious paradise I had tried to create would not last long, because one day I woke up to a visit from Kidd, who, after a heated conversation, convinced me to go looking for Thatch, "Blackbeard". According to her, Blackbeard is the only one who could remedy what happened in Nassau.
Unable to refute Kidd's arguments, I assembled my crew and again set sail north to Thatch's retirement island. The news that Blackbeard would return cheered everyone except me, for I was present the day he announced his retirement.
Arriving at the island "Ocracoke", I find all the inhabitants celebrating, except Thatch and Vane who were arguing. Apparently, Vane had had the same idea as Kidd, but with the only difference that, faced with Thatch's refusal, he preferred to call him a coward.
After Vane retired, I approached Thatch to try to convince him to come back and help us get Nassau back, but his response was the same as Vane. Thatch claimed that after the fall of Nassau he felt finished and decided to continue his retirement.
As a parting shot, Thatch informed me that on one of his last plunders he obtained information that Robert, the sage, was last seen running a slave ship called the Princess. After those last words, he invited me in for a toast, as they were officially celebrating his retirement.
The celebration continued and, while we were drinking and telling stories, I noticed the presence of a man with a suspicious attitude. After we exchanged glances, he got a little scared and started to walk away. When I noticed this, I decided to follow him.
After chasing him for a while, I saw that he met with some soldiers in some ruins. In stealth mode, I listened to the deserter's conversation while I eliminated the soldiers standing guard.
The more I listened to the conversation, the more I became convinced that this was a plot to assassinate Thatch. After watching the deserter light a flare towards the port, I knew immediately that something serious was about to happen.
The light of the flare was answered by gunfire from the guns of a warship which, hidden in the fog, was waiting for the order to attack. Due to the surprise, many Allied ships were disabled, but luckily mine survived. The only bad thing is that I had to cross a sea of flames and debris to reach it, where Thatch was waiting for me, ready to attack and board the enemy ship.
When I reached my ship, I used the spyglass to see what we were up against and I could see it. In front of me was a "Man o' War" type warship that surpassed us in strength, endurance, offensive capability and evidently in size. My strategy for dealing with such a monster was to keep my distance and use my mortars against it.
I would be lying to you if I said it was easy, it took me at least five attempts to achieve it, since the area to maneuver was not very extensive and the enemy ship had a very good attack range. Add to this the fact that I forgot to upgrade my ship's weapons and defenses a bit, so I faced this mission without fulfilling the requirements.
Once we boarded the ship, we were quickly outnumbered, but my crew was fighting back tooth and nail. All seemed to be going well until Thatch is wounded and falls to his knees. I quickly throw a pistol at him so he could take out one of his attackers, but he is immediately wounded in the neck and falls dead on the floor.
With a gesture of rage, hatred and impotence, I try to run towards him, but a soldier gunner throws me overboard. Once at sea I have no choice but to swim back to my ship and escape with the rest of the survivors, but with my mind and soul in pieces, as I had witnessed the death of one of the bravest pirates who had ever lived.
Tatch (Blackbeard) had died, but his legacy would live on in the minds of all through his exploits. We mourn his loss, but he lived as a pirate and died as a pirate. It is time for me to resume my journey and forge my own legend. To be continued...
