Chicago: Houses in Oak Park (VIII)

in Architecture+Design2 years ago (edited)

Hello arch lovers!

Once again another tour in Chicago, there is still so much to show and share, so many iconic and impressive places. The city of architecture can be seen and enjoyed from above, through its streets, parks, museums and many more places. And if we move away from Lake Michigan towards the west for once... we move away from the center this time, to visit a neighborhood.

A neighborhood that at first glance does not seem to be a typical tourist stop, quite the opposite. It is a more remote and very quiet neighborhood, on its streets we will hardly see people and all the bustle and rhythm of the city are forgotten for a moment.

It is Oak Park, it looks like the typical residential neighborhood that we have seen in so many American series and movies, a typical setting for any typical American family. Well, they are real, and it seems to me that you have to break the routine, even while traveling and also discover other areas that are not normally visited, much less photographed. We feel another atmosphere, of the real life of a city. That is.

And I wanted to talk about Oak Park, although to the north outside the city there is also another nucleus worth mentioning, perhaps further on… But Oak Park stands out for something, for the architecture and design of its various houses. Because as in the rest of the city, here too each building has its own style, color, design and personality, just like the large skyscrapers we have already seen.

That's what I wanted to verify, if the essence of Chicago was that, the conjunction between different styles, far from the homogeneity that is usually seen in many cities, where blocks and more blocks of cement are placed with windows without much interest. Here each place is unique and different, and thus a heterogeneous, harmonious and I would even say eclectic urban environment is being formed.

They are single-family houses, for people with high purchasing power, I imagine... and it is a pleasure to take a pleasant walk among those huge trees that make us forget for a moment that we are in one of the great cities of America.

I don't know how many people have come to that peaceful area just to wander around and take pictures of houses. Because some are brown, grey, black or blue. Each one has a different type of roof, different windows and a unique façade. They all invite us to want to know more about them, about the life or lives that live within. But we stay outside, we settle for observing and studying these constructions.

But there is still more, the surprise. These houses, many of them have been inspired by a style of a very famous architect, some were built by him, and there is even one of his own. This is Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous architect who developed his own style, very attached to nature, to good materials and somehow to his fusion with the environment. Where everyone feels good to be.

Although if we want to visit his own house, it can be visited even inside, but it is not in Oak Park, but rather, we have to go to the south of the city, near the University area, and there we will see another construction in a very recognizable style. It is not Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous house because it has other very iconic ones elsewhere, but perhaps this was the distinguished start of a celebrated design that endures in the books of architectural history, and in the memory of all lovers of design and architecture.

And Chicago is undoubtedly one of the best places to enjoy all of this, the architecture and the design, even in any pleasant neighborhood too.

Fall in love with Chicago, you'll see more...

Amazing! America is gorgeous.

😍✌yeah awesome

Wow! There are some amazing houses out there 😍 I !luv that each one of them are different. Here most houses look all the same and no colours allowed either 🙈

Exactly, I'd say that's a difference here, each house has its own personality and style. It's great for who loves architecture. Thanks 😊

I don't know how many people have come to that peaceful area just to wander around and take pictures of houses.

Me! I'm one of those people, lol. 🤣 Another nostalgic publication from you @duvinca, bringing back vivid memories of my ecstatic architectural explorations at Oak Park. Of course, the prestigious name of the master Architect Frank Lloyd Wright will forever shine in that famous neighborhood due to his influential residential designs. 😊

I know that most of the beautiful houses featured here are private and have restricted access. But did you get the chance to explore some of their interiors?

Ohhh you were one of them! Of course! 😊 it's a different walk and very interesting for those persons who love architecture 😉
But unfortunately I couldn't get inside because as you well said those houses are private and we just can imagine how they live in that neighborhood which is maybe normal for them but amazing for us.
I just could enter in the Frank Lloyd Wright's house in other area of the city because it's like a house-museum.
Anyway I'm pleased that you have liked it and felt again your memories alive. Thank you.

Oh yes, that's understandable as those houses are privately owned, We wouldn't want to be suddenly barging in those spaces without proper permission of course. I've visited the FLW house museum as well, and it was surely a fantastic tour! Without a doubt, the iconic neighborhood of Oak Park will forever remain in our treasure trove of architectural experiences. Who knows, there might be a second time around someday? 😁 Thank you for this incredible feature @duvinca! 😊

Yeah not allowed to enter in a private area... anyway we could enjoy just walking around and I hope someday we could come back, who knows... In the meantime we remember those moments with images and posts. Thanks again my friend!!!

Amazing display of beautiful homes, I want to one day get to know Chicago and admire its fascinating architecture. The streets look peaceful. Greetings and blessings @duvinca

It's great to be there in a place where the architect has its own relevance, where a simple neighborhood becomes an interesting area. Thanks! Hope one day you can go and I can go back! Merry Christmas
