The Rione Terra di Pozzuoli was a popular district of Pozzuoli where families and artisans lived very densely populated.
Pozzuoli is an ancient Greek colony transformed into a spa area by the Romans who benefited from the fact that it was built on the volcanic caldera of Campi Flegrei.
The Campi Flegrei are a huge volcanic zone with craters that are scattered between the islands of the Gulf of Naples and throughout its province.
The Rione Terra had been abandoned following a seismic crisis in 1984 that produced hundreds of tremors a day creating panic among local citizens.
The seismic swarm was due to the sudden rise of the soil due to the phenomenon of bradyseism caused by the movements of fluids and gas in the puteolan subsoil.
The Rione Terra had been the victim of another major disaster before.
Some ornaments of the local church, the Cathedral of Pozzuoli, had caught fire inexplicably and had produced a catastrophic fire that completely destroyed the central nave of the church.
But when the fire was put down, from the dismay of the ominous event, the euphoria began.
The church was built incorporating the magnificent temple of Augustus that came to light and the renovation work is still ongoing.
The area, which is located on a hill in the center of the modern city of Pozzuoli, was reopened to the public in 2014 but is still under renovation.
However, you can visit the outdoor areas with the characteristic alleys of the small village that accompany you to a wonderful viewpoint, the Duomo and the archaeological park.

Il Rione Terra di Pozzuoli era un quartiere popolare di Pozzuoli dove vivevano famiglie ed artigiani molto densamente popolato.
Pozzuoli è una antica colonia greca trasfomata in area termale dai romani che traevano beneficio dal fatto che era stata edificata sulla caldera vulcanica dei Campi Flegrei.
I Campi Flegrei sono una enorme zona vulcanica con crateri che sono sparsi tra le isole del golfo di Napoli e su tutta la sua provincia.
Il Rione Terra era stato abbandonato in seguito ad una crisi sismica nel 1984 che produceva centinaia di scosse al giorno creando panico tra i cittadini locali.
Lo sciame sismico era dovuto all'innalzamento del suolo repentino dovuto al fenomeno del bradisismo causato dai movimenti di fluidi e di gas nel sottosuolo puteolano.
Il Rione Terra era stato vittima di un'altro grande disastro in precedenza.
Alcuni ornamenti della chiesa locale, la Cattedrale di Pozzuoli, avevano preso fuoco inspiegabilmente ed avevano prodotto un catastrofico incendio che distrusse completamente la navata centrale della chiesa.
Ma, domato l'incendio, dallo sconforto dell'infausto evento si passò all'euforia.
La chiesa era stata edificata inglobando il magnifico tempio di Augusto che venne alla luce ed i lavori di ristrutturazione sono tuttora in corso.
La zona, che è posizionata su un'altura al centro della moderna città di Pozzuoli, è stata riaperta al pubblico nel 2014 ma è ancora in fase di ristrutturazione.
Sono tuttavia visitabili le aree esterne con i caratteristici vicoli del piccolo borgo che ti accompagnano verso un meraviglioso belvedere, il Duomo ed il parco archeologico.
