First time trying to cook deep-fried Pempek - Thursday, July 4, 2024

in #aliveandthriving3 months ago (edited)

A few weeks ago, I made a mistake and bought 1 more set of dried Pempek for my auntie to bring back to her home in Germany as a souvenir. I keep it up in the fridge until we want to eat it. The time has come, we don't know what food we want to eat today. My mother already prepared the rice. Checking the fridge and found that this dried pempek is still there. Okay, let's eat this today.

Never tried to make one or buy this dried pempek. So, I look at the "How to Cook" provided by the seller first. It says:

  1. Soak the pempek in the water for 8 hours.
  2. Pour some salt.
  3. Steam it for 10 minutes.
  4. Prepare the pempek vinegar.
  5. Pempek is ready to serve with the vinegar.

As I don't have much time for that, I improvise soaked with boiled to make it soft faster. Soak Pempek for 8 hours = Boiled pempek for 2 hours. It works and it's softer. I already added salt too before boiling the pempek. It tells to steam but we don't like steamed pempek. So, we deep-fry it. I don't know what cooked pempek looks like because it looks the same to me. I asked my little brother to check it too and he said, "The texture is different." Hmmmm... Ok, go on your turn. As the vinegar is already condensed, we heat it up too.

It's supposed to be a little crunchy outside and soft inside. With the pempek vinegar, it's complete and ready to eat like the image below. Sadly, we failed. It's still delicious because the pempek vinegar just needs to heat it up but the pempek itself is so hard like rock 🤣. We are laughing when we try to eat it. We want to make it crispy and crunchy but we make it more like rock 🤣. Me and my little brother soak the pempek in pempek vinegar first and wait until it's breakable with our teeth. We eat happily while laughing like, "Golden brown?", "It's hard kerupuk, not pempek.", and many more. My mother did the soak the pempek but she's enough with the hard and eats fried fish instead 🤣. She even offers to throw the pempek and order some food instead. Of course, me and my little brother say, "NO! Never waste any food." We eat what we cook 🤣.

It was the funniest dinner that I ever had 😂. Now, it's time for me to get food for late dinner. There's no food left in the kitchen or even rice. Everyone already sleeping now. Maybe, I'll order something outside. Have a nice day everyone!

Improvisation is welcome as long as you were able to eat the food. Nice work.

I hope you found food even late at night. Thank you for the laugh on this. LOL! Still a fun family bonding moment. Sometimes I miss my mom as she used to make us laugh (due to bloopers). Hopefully you'll get to master the right preparation of this pempek dish soon. Happy weekend!
