Good day, amazing people of hive blockchain. Welcome back to my blog. This is another day in the #inleomonthlyprompt. I’m so happy participating in this prompt. Are parents allowed to decide our career paths?
All parents want the best for their kids; they have a lot of life experience. The majority of the parents will not like their kids’s repeating the same mistake they made. A parent should not decide a child's career. Every child has that career that they desire so much and are passionate about. Choosing a career for my kids is not cool. It has been the challenge most kids are facing today: they don’t have a say when it comes to their choice of career; their parents do that for them.
I understand the fact that every parent wants the best for their kids. Every human has that one thing: the desire to be a parent. Your role is to guide, support, and teach each child all they need to know. A child should be pressured by her parents to choose a desire; every child should be given the right to choose a career that best suits them.
I have this cousin of mine; it is this young girl's desire to be a banker, but the parents want her to be a medical doctor. There is nothing this young cousin of mine has not done to convince her parents that she is not good in that field. At a point I have to step in, and I beg my uncle to allow this girl to study what she has a passion for. My uncle said he will never pay her school for again. She has to decide either to be a doctor or sit down at home. At this point, there is nothing this little girl will do if not to study the career the parents have chosen for her. The pressure coming from the parent was too much for the young girl to bear.
The parent should support and guide the child in whatever career they choose for such a child to decide to choose that career he or she has passion for it. Sit and advise them in whatever career they choose. It is not always cool for a parent to choose a career path for their kids. I had this experience when growing up: my dad wanted me to be a lawyer. Reasons best known to him for me: I want me to study mass communication. I really have passion for it. It has always been my wish for people to hear my voice. I got admission to study mass communication. Do you know that I lost that admission because my dad refused to pay my school fees?
I have to sit for jamb the next year and apply for law. I got admission. My dad paid for everything. I try my best to blend. I was really finding it very hard to do because I have no passion for the course. My lecturers will always call me to their office and complain of how bad my performance was. All thanks to my course advisor, who transferred me to the mass communication department. When I told her the course I have passion for, she called my parents and explained to them why they should allow me to study my desired course.
Seriously, parents need to understand their role in their children's lives. You are there to support the child to build her dream for the future and not choose a career for them. Guide them in their choice of career.
