La administración militar que predominaba en la época de Batista, fue invadiendo estos terrenos construyendo primeramente una manzana de casas para los alistados en el, después el hospital militar, hoy en día la clínica de Estomatologia ,el Club de los oficiales, es hoy la dirección provincial de educación, tele turquino era un cine y teatro, la Coca Cola, hoy la fábrica de refresco, la fábrica de galletas Hilda, hoy la fábrica de panque y luego las viviendas de los oficiales. Y con esas divisiones y construcciones, formó calles que ellos le asignaban sin ninguna intervención del ayuntamiento formando así una amalgama de zona cívico-militar.
Estas casas e instituciones se convirtieron en una extensión del cuartel.

El cuartel Moncada, junto con todo sus alrededores y áreas aledañas fueron convertidos en el 98 en Monumento Nacional, pasando a formar parte del patrimonio, es por eso que los nuevos propietarios de esta vivienda no pueden cambiar la fallada de sus viviendas, ni tan siquiera alterar los colores de la pintura.
Este lugar es muy visitado por turistas, niños, estudiantes y es que visitar el antiguo Cuartel Moncada, hoy Ciudad Escolar 26 de julio, es como entrar a una máquina del tiempo y revivir todos los sucesos y acontecimientos que allí tuvieron lugar.
Disfrute mucho caminar por sus amplias y limpias calles, admiro la conservación del lugar, aunque esta habitado por personas, incluyendo niños, pero se le ha inculcado el valor que tiene para la humanidad conservar este lugar, que fue testigo de parte de nuestra historia y que necesitamos que las próximas generaciones también conozcan y aprendan y se nutran de este caudal de recuerdos y conocimientos que le da mucho prestigio a la ciudad Santiago de Cuba.
