Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. It is time to go round the globe to have a look at today in history being friday the 20/12/2024. Christmas is fast approaching as it is now remaining five days to go. How is your Christmas preparation going? Well, we will begin today's look at history from Africa, particularly the horn of Africa, Ethiopia.

We begin today from the world of Ethiopia [The declaration of Ethiopia as a socialist state]. On this day in 1974, Ethiopia under the leadership of Mengistu Haile Mariam was declared a socialist state.

From Ethiopia, we move over to Pakistan [the transfer of power to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto]. Do you also know that on this day in 1971, the then Pakistani President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan transferred power to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

From Pakistan, we move over to South Korea [the birthday of Kim Young-Sam]. Now, on this day in 1927, Kim Young-Sam, the President of South Korea from 1993 to 1998 was born in Geoje Island, South Gyeongsang Province, Korea [now in South Korea].

From South Korea, we move over to India [the birthday of Sir Robert Menzies]. Do you know that on this day in 1894, Sir Robert Menzies the Prime Minister of Australia from 1939 –1941 and 1949 – 1966 was born in Jeparit, Victoria, Australia.

Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in history from Senegal [the birthday of Léopold Senghor]. Do you know that on this day in 2001, Léopold Senghor, a Senegalese poet, teacher, and statesman, and the first President of Senegal died in Verson, France at the age of 95.
