Modding "Final Fantasy VII" with 7th Heaven Mods

in Hive Gaming10 months ago

Final Fantasy VII and the Modding community have been linked for many years now. FFVII is arguably the most popular entry in the Final Fantasy franchise, and people from all over the world have played, discussed, analyzed FFVII and participated in challenge runs of the game.

One of the most popular Mods for Final Fantasy VII is called 7th Heaven. It's a fan-made modding launcher that allows you to install various mods to change the experience. It contains mods for every aspect from the game, from its script to visuals and the battle system. One mod even adds voiced lines for the characters.

7th Heaven is available on Windows, but there have been more than a few guides to install it on Linux. One particular version is made for the Steam Deck and it's called "7th Deck." This script installs and configures 7th Heaven to run on the Linux-based SteamOS.

You can download 7th Deck here. (You have to own the Steam version of Final Fantasy VII.)

I followed the instructions from the link above to install 7th Heaven on my Steam Deck. It didn't work the first time I tried, but I deleted it along with Proton, and installed it again and it worked.

I installed various mods including HD Backgrounds and Battle Textures. Nino-Style Chibi Mod for characters on the world screen, and Nino-Style Battle Mod for the characters and enemies in the battle screen. I also installed HD text and menus mod and one that changes spell names to be more consistent with other Final Fantasy games.

Final Fantasy VII looks amazing with these Mods!

I loved the Nino-style mods in particular. The battle models look exactly as the artwork for the characters, and the Chibi models look like the natural evolution of the original models of the game. I really loved how Barret looked, and I love how Cloud's Buster Sword looks on his back!

There are mods I wish to install some other time like the HD FMVs Mod and the "Echoes" Voiced-Dialogue Mod. I avoided booth due to their huge size and my limited Internet bandwidth.

There's one Mod I tried and couldn't get to work. It's a mod that adds Jessie to the party in the first mission of the game. I managed to have Jessie in the party, but her Battle Model was that of Tifa instead of Jessie. Maybe the mod wasn't compatible with the Nino-Style Mods, or maybe I was doing something wrong.

I'm playing through the modded FFVII right now, and just reached halfway through the Midgar section of the game. I'm enjoying all the changes I'm seeing. Would love to write about them in the future.

What do you think?

Thanks for reading. If you have any questions about my experience with the 7th Heaven's Mods I'll be happy to answer. Comment below.
