Trivia Tuesday is a series in which I choose a topic, and provide Fun Facts or Interesting Trivia about it. This time we'll talk about Playstation 1. It was my real first Gaming Console.
Playstation 1
1. Release Date
The original PlayStation (PS1) was released on December 1994 in Japan. It was released in USA and Europe in 1995.
As for its competitors, the Sega Saturn was released before the PS1 in 1994 and the Nintendo 64 after it in 1996.
2. CD-ROMS
The Playstation 1 wasn't the first Console to use CD-ROMs to store games' data, (that would be TurboGrafx-CD,) but it was the console that popularized the format.
I have many memories of dealing with CD-ROMs. I lost many of my PS1 CDs over time, though.
3. Region-locked
The PS1 introduced region-locking: Restricting games from one region of the world from being played in other regions. This practice continued in Playstation consoles for a while.
The Playstation I had as a child was a modded one that played games from all regions and bootleg Disks. All Playstations from my country were of that kind. It wasn't until Playstation 3 that genuine consoles became the norm.
4. Popular Games
Many games come to mind when people speak of PlayStation 1...
RPGs like the Final Fantasy series. Fighting games like Tekken. Racing games like Gran Turismo, which was known for being very realistic at the time. Horror franchises that felt too real like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
Whether its the blocky low-poly 3D, or the pre-rendered backgrounds. The look-and-feel of Playstation games is very recognizable. Even nowadays, people are still trying to emulate the PS1's aesthetics.
5. PS1 Jingle
The PlayStation 1's startup sound is iconic. It's the sound you hear every time you boot the PlayStation or restart it.
Ah~ I can hear it in my head as I'm writing this...
6. Dual Shock
The first controller to come with the PlayStation didn't have Analog Sticks. It was after Nintendo 64 released that a new controller called "Dual Shock" was introduced for the PS1. It had two analog sticks & a vibration feature!
It's as if SONY saw Nintendo's success and said "I can do it better!"
The Dual Shock Controller actually came with my first PS1. Evey single Playstation console after that came with these features by default.
7. Long-lived Production
The PS1 ceased production in 2006, making it one of the longest-lived consoles. Considering PS2 had backward compatibility with PS1, its games were played for a long time.
Last time I played games on my PS1 was probably 2007 or 2008, I kept emulating the console on PC for a little while after that too.
I thought for a long time before I settled on Playstation for this week's #triviatuesday. I enjoyed digging up this information for one of my favorite consoles of all time.
What do you think?
