Ice can be very treacherous; at the beginning of winter, even thin ice is usually quite strong, but in the spring, even thick ice can be porous and dangerous. It is also dangerous when the wind drives a wave and the ice begins to bend.
Most fishermen do not use any safety equipment; people do not believe that anything can happen to them.
