Julia and Kate are very close friends from childhood. They attended the same school, even up to high school and the university. They only parted ways in their choice of courses. While Julia studied linguistics, her friend Kate read law. But it was still the same university both attended.
Now as adults, Julia married before Kate. Well, it was just a year's interval. Both are married now, and with kids too. Julia works in a national radio house as a news and current affairs editor and a well-known on air personality (OAP) while Kate on her own part has grown to become a renounced trial attorney. And despite their different chosen fields of studies and chosen career, both remain in constant touch.
While in school, both friends usually do things in common despite their different disciplines. They read together, eat together at the cafeteria, attend church and singing rehearsals together and in fact, every other social functions. Such was how close they were. This closeness also got translated to their adult life and to an extent, the early years of their married life. But marriage and schedule of work stepped in to reduce such closeness.
On many occasions both friends had scheduled to hang out and rewind the years, yet, several times such plans had failed too. However, on this particular summer holidays, Julia got a mail from her friend Kate which reads: "Hey JJ, how's work and family? A few days of the holidays at La Havre Resort won't be a bad idea. What do you think? A close friend of mine can place reservations for us. Hit me up asap if you like the idea".
Julia has been longing for a vacation, possibly outside the country. This appears to be a perfect opportunity, to spend part of her summer holidays with Katie. It's really been a long time both met, quite unlike them. She smiled to herself, flipped through her diary and after some deep thoughts, then punched the keyboard in reply to the email, "Katie, that will be a nice idea. Place the reservations for three nights. I am with you!"
Both friends found their ways to La Havre Resort on that fateful day. Reservations had already been made by Katie through her friend, as promised. It was indeed a perfect resort. In their first night, they sat close to the sea, enjoying the cool sea breeze as they kept chatting, telling stories for hours and into the wee hours of the next day. When sleep starts calling, they retired to their rooms.
Later in the afternoon, they came out again. This time they changed the scene. It was time to taste some French delicacies, drinks and all that. They started with the French onion soup, then to Bouillabaisse, and Tarte Tatin before they then ordered some alcoholic drinks to go down with another delicacy, the Boeuf Bourguignon. It was indeed a marathon of eating.
And this was where they got it all wrong! By the time they had gulped down two bottles of a strong alcoholic drink, they became tipsy and could not even rise from their seats. JJ and Katie had to be helped out into their various rooms. And there were paparazzis who made a good job of their misfortunes.
By the time they woke up the next day, the news of their unfortunate outing was awash the major news channels. They were relieved to find out that it was just some misguided steps and muttering of nothings that was shown to the whole world and nothing more.
There and then Julia and Kate made two resolutions, which is: to end their summer visit and return home immediately; and secondly never to drink alcohol in public. They went into their rooms to pack a few things and as they were cheffaured to the airport, both burst out into some hearty laughter over the turn of events.
This is my entry into the inkwell fiction prompt #150 - "Resolution".
