Hi friends of the #weekendexperiences community,
This weekend I have very easy to indicate what I would like to do this weekend instead of doing what I am doing because since Friday night I am spending as 70% of the publication of Spain by the epidemic of influenza A and Covid-19.
The little I have left the bed and the house has been this morning to go to buy bread in the next town and as you can see the rain and the cold prevail so doing any outdoor activity is impossible although today I feel much better than yesterday.
So, today is going to be a day to watch TV and why not try to make a lego together with my cousin, as I have been told that they will come to see me at home. This is the car we built a few weeks ago. But I think it would be a good idea to build it again.
We are going on a trip
So, to choose an activity and a place to go with my mind is very easy for me to do and that is to choose a place with sun and good weather, being in Spain a place that guarantees you this weather the Canary Islands.
This Spanish archipelago in front of the coast of Morocco is a paradisiacal place where almost all year round the temperature does not go below 20 degrees and does not go above 35 degrees and where there are a lot of things to do during a weekend.
Visit to the Teide National Park
One of the most recommended activities that I would like to do again is to climb from one of the villages on the coast of Tenerife at sea level to the Teide National Park visiting the various viewpoints along the way with beautiful views of the island and the imperial volcano.
At the same time, as one ascends, one sees the contrast of the type of nature of the environment, as the pine forests disappear and we find a more arid environment due to the altitude.
As a final point of the route, reaching the slopes of the volcano and seeing its grandeur with the summit at 3715 meters is a nice experience that would make me forget the discomfort of the flu.
A walk through Candelaria
After spending the morning going up to the Teide National Park and trying to take the cable car to the top, which I have never been able to do because there were always long queues to go up, my next favorite place on the island is the coastal town of Candelaria with its impressive Basilica.
I am not a very religious person, but when I visit different towns or cities in Spain, one of the places I like to visit are their temples of prayer and see how in each place there is a markedly different style. For example in the north of Spain there is a very marked Romanesque style, in other places there is a more Gothic style and in this case in Candelaria its temple is a beautiful neoclassical temple.
The temple is erected in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria, which is the patron saint of the Canary Islands, since two aboriginal Guanche shepherds of the island in 1930 found an image of this virgin in a cave near the place where the basilica is currently built.
However, for me, as beautiful as the Basilica is, I like to visit Candelaria to soak up the Canarian culture by seeing the statues of the Meceyes Canarios (Canarian aboriginal kings).
It is a set of nine sculptures representing the nine Menceyes who ruled the island of Tenerife at the time of the conquest of the island by the Spanish crown.
As you can see, these Mencelles had strong bodies and big torsos and their main weapons were traditional like sticks, spears, etc.
Visiting this place at sunset is always highly recommended for the beautiful views of the island's coastline.
And if the water is not too cold, to be able to take a bath in a beach of black volcanic sand.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Finally, as part of my day tour of Tenerife I would recommend visiting the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is the capital of the island.
Right in the center, in the Plaza de España, one can enjoy a pleasant place for the senses as a result of the manufacture of a large pond from which are reflected some of the charismatic places of the city as is the cabildo (Canarian government) and the cross of victory.
It is also highly recommended to visit it during the day. Since in the daytime you can see reflected in the pond the mountains of volcanic origin that surround the city.
Strolling through its streets, one will realize that the inhabitants of the island are very attached to the sea, as can be seen in several sculptures.
In fact, the inhabitants of the island are popularly called chicharreros, which are the fishermen of a variety of fish called chicharro, which even has a statue in one of the streets.
What to eat in Tenerife?
Despite the flu days, for some reason I do not lose my appetite when I am sick. So talking about the Canary Islands, eating a good fish like sea bream accompanied by wrinkled potatoes and mojo canario comes to mind.
In the Canary Islands it is traditional to cook potatoes with salt, being cooked in their own skin. To have to peel them once they are cold on the plate in front of you.
As an accompaniment to these potatoes, the Canarians have two sauces that they call mojos.
The green mojo with coriander, olive oil, vinegar, cumin, garlic and salt. It is very tasty and like the one made in the Canary Islands there is none like it.
The other mojo of red color, which is called mojo picón, is the one I like the most. Where the red chili is in charge of giving it the characteristic spicy flavor that I like so much.
Back to reality
Well, friends, I return to reality and as you can see it is still raining, although I am in better health today and after this virtual trip to the island of Tenerife.
Best regards.
