Bridges of Alcoy, Spain 🌉 ⛪🍖

in Worldmappin8 months ago

I promised you the second part of my Alcoy walk/visit and it took me over a month to finally release it... 🤦‍ But, here we are... So, in the first part, I took a walk around the Via Verde route, and the finish line was the photo where we reached "civilization" and returned to the city...

This was my second visit (or was it my third? 🤔) and I'm not sure if we can call it a city, or town as it has over 60K residents and covers an area of almost 130 sqkm... It is located in the Valencian Community and often marked as an industrial and university city... To be honest, I didn't notice some big industry around the city, but maybe we didn't visit that part as the area of the city is huge...

01.jpg

02.jpg

As you can notice from the first couple of photos of the buildings and architecture, the city has a long history... According to Wikepedia page, the town was established in 1256, but the human presence in the area dates from 60K years ago! Of course, as in many old towns, at the very beginning, it was important to build a castle to defend it... Like many other towns/cities in Spain, Alcoy has the rest of the castle, but it is not situated in the (current) city, but rather in the outskirts...

03.jpg

05.jpg

We visited the city in April 2023, and I'm not sure if this "small" castle is a replica of the real one, but they have used it as a stage for a local celebration... It is not a "fixed" building, but it does look huge in this photo...

04.jpg

Behind the "mini-castle", you can see Iglesia arciprestal de Santa María, and also in the image above from the other angle... It is not as old as a castle, as it is constructed in the 18th century... After that long walk in nature, we were so hungry that we ignored buildings, and architecture and focused on searching restaurants... The thing of finding a free day for these trips is a hard job, and usually, it means that others have a free day too, including restaurants... In addition to that, Spaniards have lunch in the late afternoon, so we had to make an effort to find one who works...

Town hall building, dates from 1861

In the meantime, we were walking around the city center, and you can see the main square (Plaça d'Espanya) in the photo above...

08.jpg

09.jpg

I have to go back to the beginning of the post where I mentioned that Alcoy is an industrial city and it got that label a long time ago... As a matter of fact, there is an interesting story about the so-called Petroleum Revolution that took part in the city! The revolution took place in July 1873, when workers raised their voices (and torches), and as they were poor, they used petroleum-soaked torches... There are stories that the city stank of petroleum in those days...

10.jpg

11.jpg

another potential place for eat that was closed 😒

12.jpg

13.jpg

14.jpg

Searching for an open restaurant through the narrow streets of Alcoy... Btw., fun fact, do you know why Spanish streets are so narrow? If you guessed that it was because of the sun, you were right... By having buildings so close to each other, they create shade prevent hot sun entering homes, and keep the street cooler during the summer days...

15.jpg

16.jpg

Looking at these photos, I have realized that we didn't visit the most emblematic bridge in the city, the famous San Jorge Bridge, which was built at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th... On the other side, the photo above was taken from the Puente de Cervantes (also known as Puente Maria Cristina), which was built in 1838... In the distance, you can see one of the newer bridges (among the 40 bridges that Alcoy has) named Puente de Fernando Reig...

I don't know why, but this was another time when we found only a German restaurant to be open! It happened to us in Vicenza, Italy, when there were no other restaurants open at the time when we were hungry... 😀 This time, it happened the same... We did find one "suspicious" pizzeria and McDonalds, but we refused to go there...

22.jpg

23.jpg

24.jpg

Anyway, the food wasn't "special", but rather an ordinary meal... It was tasty and it filled our tummies, so we could proceed and order pancakes after the main course!

25.jpg

26.jpg

Well, I ordered pancakes, and my other half ordered some fruit...

27.jpg

28.jpg

29.jpg

When we left the restaurant, on the way to the parking where we left the car, I saw this a bit creepy mural that I had to photograph... Have no idea who is the person in the image, it could be a resident or some other important person... If you know, please let me know in the comment section... :)

30.jpg

And that would be all for this walk around the streets of Alcoy! What I like the most from these posts is that I learned a lot researching the Internet about the place that I visited... I know that it is a bit in reverse, but I like to take photos and after that explore what is what... If I miss something, it gives me a reason to go back and revisit the place! For example, I have to check out that San Jorge Bridge!!

Thank you for your time,

~ph~

An interesting place, I like such historical ones, buildings of which are interwovened with history.

What's on the twelfth photo? Looks like a mosque converted to a church 🙄

Tbh, I don't know... That could be the case as they did that in many places in Spain... They converted one to another whenever one side would take over the place... :)

City or town, who cares.. it's pretty! 😊

The German restaurant was a pity, I was hoping to see some delicious patatas bravas on your plate 😂

Hehehe... Yeah, that was a bummer, but I suppose that the hardest thing to find in Spain (and France) around 13-14 hours is a place to eat... Especially on working days... They always have some special (kitchen) hours... But, in the end, it was our fault that we didn't plan our trip better... That happens when you do these "spontaneous" trips... 😃

At least you learned your lesson 😁

In Switzerland, it's almost impossible to find a place to eat on Sunday and Monday. It's so frustrating! You want to have a relaxing weekend and eat out and the only option is fast food, because the rest is closed...

Really? I didn't visit Switzerland so had no idea, but I didn't expect that you couldn't eat anytime... On the other time, it makes sense as people who work in restaurants should have free days... But, maybe they should take them on Mondays-Tuesdays... 😃

Better late than never. I never knew that they made the streets narrow for sunlight. Does it really get in the way of everything that they need to do so?

Well, they did it for the shade, but also, when those streets and buildings were built there were no cars, trucks, and so much traffic... Those streets were built as a two-way street for 2 donkeys... 😂

It's a lovely walk, the streets look Amazing, the food looks yum, captured everything so nicely. Such a masterpiece.

Thank you for your comment! I'm glad that you liked it!

Sounds like you have a great day! That mural is creepy but pretty aesthetic. There are similar murals all-around the globe with that style.

Hehehe... I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to find it creepy... 😂
It was a nice walk and I'm happy that the weather is getting better day by day, so I hope I will have a chance to travel around and visit some new places... 😃

Spain is one of my dream country to visit

I hope that you will fulfill your wish!

I hope and I wish as well

I went to Spain so many years ago and looking at these photos I remembered a couple things from our trip. Their architecture will always fascinate me.

I'm happy to hear that the post brought up some nice memories from your trip to Spain! I'm also a big fan of old buildings and architecture... And in Spain, you can find plenty of that... :)

Not so surprised by narrow streets, but how empty they are is fascinating!

While the Spanish are enjoying their siesta, the Germans are making money 😂

Architecture is so well preserved no one would guess how old actually it is!

I think it was some festival, maybe something around Easter, as I know that nothing was open, banks, shops, restaurants...

While the Spanish are enjoying their siesta, the Germans are making money 😂

That is 100% true! 😂 Like I said in the post, the same goes for Italians, and probably Greeks... Those Mediterranean vibes are killing productivity... 🤣

If I miss something, it gives me a reason to go back and revisit the place! For example, I have to check out that San Jorge Bridge!!

When I was in Venice for the first time, I missed seeing the Rialto Bridge.
After returning home, friends did not believe me that I had missed such an attraction.
"Well something must remain to be seen another time?".
I have seen that bridge several times since that first visit to Venice 🙂

Hehehe... It is like that! Btw. I have never been to Venice, but a few years in a row I'm staying in towns in its area... Maybe this year... 😃

The most important thing is that good weather serves you. In addition, comfortable sneakers, a camera with plenty of storage space and a full wallet are all you need. I stayed in a hotel in Treviso and hotel in Lido di Jesolo and went to Venice from there.
By my car or by boat.

There are many things to see in the city you visit, but I'm curious about the portion of meat on your dining table. Is that one portion?

The pancakes also look delicious, I love the layer of topping on top!

Hahahaha... It was a portion for 1 person!! And it was as big as it looks in the photo... 😂 As I was hungry from a long walk, I did eat it all... lol...

Wow, the portion is very big.
You are very hungry 😀,and you definitely enjoy it !.

Have fun friends!.

Nice share! A little different from the seaside and nature this time round!
!LUV

Yeah, it is different from the seaside view... Not sure if I would live there, but it is nice to make a change and visit inland cities too... ;)
