Joanne has a maize farm which she has cultivated for year now. During the last harvest the yield was very poor. Joanne decided to spice things up by going for improved variety. She approached Janet who took her to the research institute where this paid a handsome price for some improved variety of maize.
As a precautionary measure Joanne was asked to buy an expensive herbicide to be applied few weeks after she had planted the maize in the farm. This is to avoid weeds growing rapidly and stalling the growth of the maize. She gladly paid and went home.
During the planting season she went to har farm and planted the hybrid or improved variety she had purchased from the research institute. She also tried as much as possible to comply with all the safety measures she was thought by the institute.
Few weeks after planting, she meticulously applied the herbicide as directed. Fews days later Joanne came to observe her farm and discovered to her greatest surprise that the herbicide worked. The negative aspect of it was that it chased away all flies and insects from the farm. The smell was really repulsive to both plants and lower animals.
Joanne returned to the farm four weeks after planting. By then the maize 🌽 was expected to start producing flowers. Insects like bees and other flying objects were needed for pollination. None came anyway. That was à bad sign really. Without pollination the maize won't flourish and the yield will definitely be poor.
It was then that it downed on Joanne that the herbicide had negatively impacted on her improved variety of the maize.
She kept faith all will be well but the signs were ominous, the yield will be poor.
