It's a similar story in many tropical countries along the equator. I could tell you how many species are lost every day because of it, and it would like horrify you. Nature always returns and recovers, as long as it's simply left alone, as you mentioned. By the way, Mimosa pudica - sensitive plant, is very common here too.
