MISGUIDED EXPECTATIONS - Am Alive And Thriving - 23.12.2022
Misguided expectation is what gives rise to conflict and disappointment in relationships. When you have expectations of how somebody you are relating with should behave and they fail to meet your expectations, bitterness and disappointment can arise. A lot of us have expectations for how our parents, children, pastor, friends, and in-laws should behave, and so on. When they behave contrary, we get upset and disappointed. But the question is, why should anyone conform their behavior to suit our expectations? They can’t even do it for their creator.
We only have a responsibility to respond to people’s actions. We can continue to relate with them, redefine the boundary of that relationship, or quit the relationship altogether. Our understanding of human behavior is what enables us then to be able to cope with any kind of human character. the scripture tells us that Jesus did not commit himself to any man because he knew what was in man. Jesus understood human character and behavior. Why we are continually disappointed is because we commit ourselves to men and forget that the nature of man is disloyalty. The day you cure yourself of misguided expectations is the day you will begin to build healthy relationships and profit from every man that God brings your way.
When you bring expectations into a relationship you will be disappointed, rather bring openness. Openness protects you from disappointment and empowers you to see the value in every man, including your enemies. The reason why we are more likely to be disappointed by our friends than by our enemies is because we don’t have any expectations for our enemies. We keep an open mind. It is that openness that frees us to allow them to behave any way they want to behave, and it does not concern us. From this position we can adjust our behavior accordingly and take advantage rather than become victims of the situations that arise from their behaviors.
Therefore, do not expect more than you can give because EXPECTATION MINUS REALITY EQUALS DISAPPOINTMENT.
