The picture is mine.
In this part of my country Nigeria, there nis no special arrangements for elderly one especially when they are sick. It is the responsibility of children or daughter in-law to care for them if there is. Mama Ekwere is my neighbor with 2 children. She is from Zaria but married to Akwa Ibom Man but Her husband died for decades now.
Her late daughter use to care for her in a loving way but unfortunately she died of motor accident. I still remember how difficult it was for us to tell her about the death of her daughter . But she has to know before her burial. It was a difficult period for her. Her only Son is schooling at Zaria as we speak so no one is with her in the house except good neighbors.
She is a diabetic patient who is always on drugs. Unfortunately, she took over does and slept for 2 days inside her room. But fortunately her door was not locked . So when another neighbor went to check on her, she found her sleeping almost lifeless. She called me to come and as i went in, i saw the medicine she took, 1,000mg. I quickly get coconut water and we forced it in her mouth. She didn't hear us or even know what we doing.
we kept on calling on her on top of our voice. We boiled water to clean her up . I rushed outside to buy bread and milk so that we can make tea. While we there yet Son called several times and we pick the phone to tell him her mother's condition. Is like she heard our discussion and woke up. We gave her the phone as you see in the picture to talk to her Son. But she can't even open eyes let alone talking.
We kept on helping her till evening when she was able to sit down well and talk. I asked her what she will eat she said tea and bread. Immediately i boil hot water. By then i have called one of her friend to come and assist us in sweeping her rooms, wash plates and pot, wash the rest room. She responded and we all were happy to see her eat.
We were so happy that she came back to life.
Now that she has eaten, arrangements was made to take her to hospital for test so that the doctor will recommend what to give her. Even though am into health, i don't like treatment without test. My neighbor called the pastor of her church who came the following day to carry her.
This woman is good and kind that is why everyone try to help her. She was greatful to God who brought us to help her. It was then she told us the mixture of drugs she took. Chai, drugs abuse is bad. Elderly people can make a lot of mistake in taking their drugs. They need someone to guide them.
Thank you all for reading my story with mama Ekwere. I thank God for reviving her. In working towards my weekly goal, i have staked 100Ap
