Today I pulled out my "Illuminati" acrylic to feature another coin. This time, it's a shiny 1943 steel penny. It looks like silver at first glance, but it's definitely steel. Copper was being used for shell casings during WW2 and STEEL production was ramping up, so rather than using copper, they used steel.
It's really shocking to see a silvery penny among normal pennies, especially when they're in such good condition. I tried to capture the SILVER color, but my camera gave it this golden tone. I tried adjusting the colors to better match reality.
I'm fond of this design coin. Older pennies had a deeper press especially the obverse with Lincoln. New pennies are flat by comparison.
The detail shows up much better in the un-edited version. But also has a golden color.
