Greetings friends. For some time now I have been sharing here in the community some posts about my chickens, which along with my cats, are also my pets.

However, today I am not exactly talking about my chickens, but I am going to talk to you about feeding them, something that is more complicated than many may think.

Saludos amigos. Desde hace un tiempo he estado compartiendo aquí en la comunidad algunas publicaciones sobre mis gallinas, que junto a mis gatas, también son mis mascotas.

Sin embargo, hoy no vengo a hablarles exactamente de mis gallinas, sino que vengo a hablarles respecto a su alimentación, algo que es más complicado de lo que muchos pueden creer.

If you have visited some of the posts I have made about my hens, you may have noticed that I have a lot of them. I certainly started with 4 hens, but now I have over 20 hens. That's not counting the 11 chicks I have in the pen and another hen who has just started hatching in a nest.

In the beginning it was very easy to feed my 4 hens, I fed them exclusively corn, but as the hen population increased, it became very difficult to feed them exclusively corn, so I had to look for alternatives. Besides, corn alone does not feed the hens very well when they are laying eggs, so, as I said, I had to look for alternatives.

Si han visitado algunas de las publicaciones que he hecho sobre mis gallinas, quizás se han dado cuenta de que tengo un montón. Ciertamente empecé con 4 gallinas, pero ahora tengo más de 20 gallinas. Eso sin contar a los 11 pollitos que tengo en el corral y a otra gallina que acaba de comenzar a empollar en un nido.

En un comienzo era muy sencillo darle comida a mis 4 gallinas, les daba exclusivamente maíz, pero a medida que la población de gallinas fue aumentando, se dificultó mucho poder darles exclusivamente maíz, así que tuve que buscar alternativas. Además, el maíz solamente no alimenta del todo bien a las gallinas cuando estas están poniendo huevos, así que hay que buscar, como dije, alternativas.

I was visiting some pet stores where I was offered several alternatives of feed that provide calcium and vitamins to the hens, to help them lay eggs, but it is not always easy to buy feed by the bag, but it is necessary to feed them properly.

That same week, I bought two bags of chicken feed for very different purposes.

Estuve visitando algunas tiendas de animales en las que me ofrecieron diversas alternativas de alimentos que proporcionan calcio y vitaminas a las gallinas, para ayudarlas a la puesta de huevos, pero no siempre es fácil comprar alimentos por saco, pero es necesario para poder alimentarlas como se debe.

Esa misma semana, compré dos sacos de alimento para gallinas, con propósitos muy distintos.

Note that one is 35 kilos and the other is 20 kilos. The 35 kilos is a feed that is used for the daily feeding of the hens, because it has different elements such as corn, sorghum, proteins, among other things. That is to say, it is a feed to give to the entire population of hens, from roosters to growing chickens that are large, but still young.

However, the 20 kg feed is different, it is a feed exclusively for laying hens. It brings vitamins necessary to help the hen to produce the egg, being calcium one of the elements that also brings this feed to help them to produce the egg shell.

Without this food, hens also lay eggs, but very few. One every two days and so on, they do not produce enough and sometimes they do not even lay an egg even if they are of age and the rooster mates with the hen. So you can see that the feeding of the hens is a very important issue.

Fíjense que uno es de 35 kilos y otro es de 20 kilos. El de 35 kilos es un alimento que sirve para el diario comer de las gallinas, pues tiene distintos elementos como maíz, sorgo, proteínas, entre otras cosas. Es decir, es un alimento para darle a toda la población de gallinas, desde a gallos, como a pollos en crecimiento que son grandes, pero jóvenes aún.

Sin embargo, el alimento de 20 kilos es distinto, es un alimento exclusivo para gallinas ponedoras. Pues trae vitaminas necesarias para ayudar a la gallina a producir el huevo, siendo el calcio uno de los elementos que también trae este alimento para ayudarlas a producir esa cáscara del huevo.

Sin este alimento, las gallinas también ponen huevos, pero muy pocos. Uno cada dos días y así, no producen los suficientes y a veces ni siquiera llegan a poner ni un huevo aunque estén en edad y el gallo se aparee con la gallina. Así que ya ven que es un tema de mucha importancia la alimentación que le dan a las gallinas.

In fact, it is not just a matter of feeding corn only, because once a friend of mine, who also raises chickens, told me that he fed them exclusively with corn and the chickens were not laying eggs, so someone recommended him to feed them with coconut, so he did that.

Coconut is a food that contributes a lot to the strengthening of the bones, so by giving this food, it served as a supplement to the hens and helped them to produce calcium in their organism, so they started to produce eggs.

De hecho, no es solo cuestión de darle maíz al animal solamente, porque en una ocasión un amigo, que también cría gallinas, me contó que las alimentaba exclusivamente con maíz y las gallinas no estaban poniendo huevos, así que alguien le recomendó alimentarlas con coco así que eso hizo.

El coco es un alimento que contribuye mucho al fortalecimiento de los huesos, así que al darle este alimento, sirvió como suplemento a las gallinas y las ayudó a producir calcio en su organismo, así que comenzaron a producir huevos.

In my case, they have not stopped laying, but not enough eggs, so with this food they have increased their production a little.

I will tell you how I feed them with this feed. Basically I use this small bucket as a measure for all the hens. I don't fill it, it's just the one I use to empty the measures I feed them with.

En mi caso, no han dejado de poner, pero no los suficientes huevos, así que con este alimento a aumentado un poco la producción.

Les contaré cómo las alimento con estos alimentos. Básicamente uso este pequeño balde como medida para todas las gallinas. No lo lleno, simplemente es el que uso para vaciar las medidas con las que las alimento.

I haven't stopped feeding them corn either. That smaller plastic container is what I use as a measure for each portion of feed that I empty into the larger black container. In each case I use a measure from this container of corn.

Tampoco he dejado de alimentarlas con maíz. Ese envase de plástico más pequeño es el que utilizo de medida para cada porción de alimento que vacío en el envase negro más grande. En cada caso uso una medida de este envase de maíz.

Below you can see the exclusive feed for laying hens. As you can see, the particle is short, but coarse. I use two measures of this feed from the white plastic container together with one measure of corn. This combination I give it only to the hens that are already laying, obviously when I am going to feed them I separate them in different pens that I have.

A continuación pueden ver el alimento exclusivo para gallinas ponedoras. Como pueden ver, la partícula es corta, pero gruesa. De este alimento utilizo dos medidas del envase de plástico blanco junto a una medida de maíz. Esta combinación se la doy solo a las gallinas que ya están poniendo, evidentemente cuando las voy a alimentar las separo en distintos corrales que tengo.

The other feed, the one I give to all hens in general, is easier to identify. It is longer but the same thickness as the feed for laying hens.

El otro alimento, el que le doy a todas las gallinas en general, es más fácil de identificar. Es más largo pero del mismo grosor que el alimento para gallinas ponedoras.

Below you can see a comparative image between the two foods. Not only are they visually different, which helps to identify them, but they are also different in composition, each having a different purpose.

I also use these two feeds mixed together to prepare another portion for roosters and hens in general, after feeding the ones that are laying eggs. I prepare one portion of the white container filled with corn, two portions of the general chicken feed and a single portion of the laying hen feed. This is quite a lot, because it is a lot of chickens and young hens (that are not laying yet) that are separated from the hens that are laying, so they also get a good feed while they are doing their time and growing.

Abajo pueden ver una imagen comparativa entre los dos alimentos. No solamente son distintos visualmente, lo cual ayuda a identificarlos, sino que también son distintos en cuanto a su composición, cada uno tiene un propósito distinto.

Estos dos alimentos también los uso mezclado para preparar otra porción para gallos y gallinas en general, después de alimentar a las que están poniendo huevos. Preparo una porción del envase blanco llena con maíz, dos porciones del alimento en general de pollos y una sola porción del alimento para gallinas ponedoras. Esto es bastante, porque son muchos pollos y gallinas jóvenes (que aún no están poniendo) las que están separadas de las gallinas que sí están poniendo, así que también se alimentan bien mientras cumplen su tiempo y van creciendo.

On the other hand, I also have a smaller feed for chicks. This feed is given to chicks that are a few days old. They do not know how to eat well yet and their mouths are very small, so they can choke on other foods, that is why it is necessary to give them this small food so that they grow quickly.

Por otra parte, también tengo un alimento que es más pequeño y que sirve para pollitos. Este alimento se les da a los pollitos que tienen pocos días de nacidos. Aún no saben comer bien y su boca es muy pequeña, así que se pueden atragantar con los otros alimentos, por eso es necesario darles este alimento pequeño para que crezcan rápidamente.

As you can see, feeding hens has its nuances and important points. One might think that they are animals that eat anything and that with this they will be fine, but no, it is very important to have knowledge about it and know how to feed each one of them to keep them growing fat and beautiful...

Como ven, tiene sus matices y puntos importantes la alimentación que le damos a las gallinas. Uno podría pensar que son animales que comen cualquier cosa y que con esto estarán bien, pero no, es muy importante tener conocimientos al respecto y saber cómo alimentar a cada una de ellas para que sigan creciendo gorditas y bonitas...
