In a post I made recently in the community, where I talked about the roosters problem, I told you that I had had a problem with one of my roosters, the biggest one in the pen.

As I explained there, roosters tend to be very territorial and if they meet another rooster, they will fight each other. Well, one of my roosters, when he escaped from the pen and started to fight with another one, got caught in a pineapple plant and while he was struggling to get out, he ended up getting a nasty wound. I don't know if you have seen what pineapple plants look like, but their leaves are like zippers. The rooster managed to escape from the pineapple plant but he did get that wound.

Como bien expliqué allí, los gallos suelen ser muy territoriales y si se encuentran con otro gallo, van a pelear entre si. Pues bien, uno de mis gallos, cuando se escapó del corral y se puso a pelear con otro, se quedó enganchado en una planta de piña y mientras forcejeaba para salirse, terminó por hacerse una herida bien fea. No sé si han visto cómo son las plantas de piña pero sus hojas son como cierras. El gallo logró escapar de la planta de piña pero sí se hizo esa herida.

With the passing of the days and thanks to some healing cream I bought, the wound closed, but the paw was left tucked up and could not walk with the paw extended but with the paw bent, just as you can see in the picture above. In fact, you can see better in the picture below the lower part of the paw, which has a black callosity because that part is the one that has contact with the ground.

On the recommendation of a friend who is a veterinarian, he told me to make him a prosthesis to help him get his paw back in shape. He showed me some on the internet and it gave me an idea but I knew mine would not look as nice.

The first thing I did was to make a template for the leg, so that it would be the size of the rooster's leg. I used cardboard to engrave the size.

Con el pasar de los días y gracias a unos cicatrizantes en crema que compré, la herida cerró, pero la pata quedó recogida y no podía caminar con la pata extendida sino con la pata doblada, justo como ven en la imagen de arriba. De hecho, pueden verse mejor en la foto que está abajo la parte inferior de la pata, que tiene una callosidad negra porque esa parte es la que tiene contacto con la tierra.

Por recomendación de un amigo que es veterinario, me dijo que le hiciera una prótesis que lo ayudara a que la pata volviera a tener su forma. Me mostró algunas por internet y la verdad me dio una idea pero sabía que la mía no quedaría tan bonita.

Lo primero que hice fue hacer la plantilla de la pata, para que quedara del tamaño de la pata del gallo. Usé cartulina para grabar el tamaño.

If you look at the picture above, the middle toe already had a callus there, because that part of the toe was the one he walked with, not with the sole of the paw but with the toe.

So I cleaned the paw, with more healing and other medications to make the paw completely clean. Then I wrapped it in a bag so that it would not get dirty again, while I made the prosthesis.

Si se fijan en la imagen de arriba, el dedo del medio ya tenía una callosidad ahí, porque esa parte del dedo era con la que caminaba, no con la planta de la pata sino con el dedo.

Por eso le hice una limpieza en la pata, con más cicatrizante y otros medicamentos para dejarle la pata completamente limpia. Luego se la envolví en una bolsa para que no volviera a ensuciarse, mientras le hacía la prótesis.

And so, I started to make the prosthesis. You can see in the template that he had some blood stains, because of the damage he did to his paw, some of his nails fell off.

But the idea of the template is that her paw would soon be better. So, I cut out the template that would serve as a guide for the support.

Y así pues, comencé a hacer la prótesis. Pueden ver en la plantilla que tenía unas manchas de sangre, pues por el propio daño que se hizo en la pata algunas uñas se le cayeron.

Pero la idea de la plantilla es que su pata pronto estuviese mejor. Así pues, recorté la plantilla que me serviría de guía para el soporte.

I made this support with a strong wire, but malleable enough to be able to shape it with a clamp so that it would not be too heavy for the rooster. To make it clear, I used the kind of wire used in construction, with which the metal skeletons of the columns are usually fastened.

Notice how the skeleton of the prosthesis is placed on the template, it is practically the same size.

Este soporte lo hice con un alambre fuerte, pero lo suficientemente maleable como para poder darle forma con una pinza y que al final no resultase demasiado pesado para el gallo. Para que se entienda bien, usé alambre del que usan en la construcción, con el que suelen sujetarse los esqueletos metálicos de las columnas.

Fíjense cómo se ve el esqueleto de la prótesis puesto sobre la plantilla, queda prácticamente del mismo tamaño.

The truth is that here I was thinking about what to do, because I didn't know what to do next, whether to do it with paper, wood or melted plastic, but when I thought of plastic I immediately thought of using silicone stick to cover this wire support.

Silicone is perfect because it is waterproof, not heavy and relatively soft, plus it would serve to cover well the metal parts of the skeleton.

La verdad aquí me quedé pensando en qué hacer, pues no sabía que sería lo siguiente, si hacerlo con papel, con madera o plástico derretido, pero cuando pensé en el plástico de inmediato se me ocurrió usar silicón en barra para cubrir este soporte de alambre.

El silicón es perfecto porque es contra el agua, no es pesado y es relativamente suave, además de que serviría para cubrir bien las partes metálicas del esqueleto.

Now, to hold this support I used some plastic pipes with flexible. These small pipes are usually used for cables but I could use them for this purpose.

As I said, they are flexible to move to the sides, but when you open them in half and stretch them, they keep the shape as if they were a hook, so they would be useful to keep the prosthesis fixed both in the fingers and in the leg of the rooster, that's why I attached each piece of pipe to the wire and covered it with silicone.

Ahora bien, para sujetar este soporte usé unas tuberías de plástico que con flexibles. Estas pequeñas tuberías suelen usarse para los cables pero a mi me serviría para este propósito.

Como dije, son flexibles para moverse a los lados, pero al abrirlas a la mitad y estirarlas, mantienen la forma como si fuesen un gancho, así que me servirían para mantener la prótesis fija tanto en los dedos como en la pata del gallo, por eso sujeté cada trozo de tubería al alambre y lo cubrí con silicón.

Well, it was time to attach the piece to the leg of the rooster. I was a little nervous because I thought it wouldn't fit, but surprisingly everything attached very well.

I know that roosters are very restless when they have something on their feet, so I used thread and tape to attach it well. But since the toes and leg were protected by the black tubing, the thread and tape never squeezed the leg enough to cause any damage.

Bien, llegó la hora de fijar la pieza a la pata del gallo. Estaba un poco nervioso porque pensé que no le quedaría, pero sorpresivamente todo enganchó muy bien.

Yo sé que los gallos son muy inquietos cuando tienen algo en las patas, así que usé hilo y cinta adhesiva para fijarlo bien. Pero como los dedos y la pata estaban protegidos por la tubería negra, el hilo y la cinta en ningún momento le apretaban la pata como para causarle algún daño.

Yes, the wound looks ugly, but at least it is dry, which is the important thing, and soon it will be healing and the prosthesis will no longer be necessary and my dear rooster Claudio (that's his name) will be able to continue doing his business in the henhouse with his hens.

Sí se ve fea la herida, pero al menos está seca que es lo importante y pronto estará cicatrizando y no será necesaria más la prótesis y mi querido gallo Claudio (así se llama), podrá seguir haciendo de las suyas en el gallinero con sus gallinas.
