Friends Today I want to talk to you about a song that I think we all know, although some of you may not know it, although I doubt it haha. Well I mean “Chiquitita” by ABBA, which, well, today is 45 years and 279 days since it came out. I don't know, I think it's a good time to tell you a little bit about it. I personally am struck by how fast time goes by because it's almost half a century since it came out, isn't it? Pretty crazy to think about it.

Let's see, “Chiquitita” came out on January 16, 1979. For those of you who don't know the band ABBA was in their prime, putting out hit after hit, and this song, in particular, has always had a special place. The song itself can be said to be catchy enough that most of us have hummed the lyrics at some point. Well in my case the version that is in Spanish, because the original if I can't sing it or pronounce it haha. But I guess English speakers will hum it. In my case, when I listen to it, it brings me that feeling of.... I don't know, nostalgia mixed with calm, something like that. It has a rhythm that, although it's not super fast, it surrounds you in a simple way. Maybe it's because I've been listening to the song since my childhood and somehow I've grown to appreciate it.

The theme of the song is clear, isn't it? It's about comforting a friend who's going through a rough patch. And if we think about it, we've all had those moments when things seem to be going downhill. The lyrics are about just that, trying to lift your spirits. And it's funny because, even though the song is so long ago, it's still something you can easily relate to. ABBA knew how to hit the nail on the head with human emotions, but not in a grandiloquent way. I mean, it's not like you're going to cry or anything, but it does have that “something” that makes you think a little bit.

If we focus on the fact that so much time has passed, it makes me think about how much music has changed since then. Nowadays, finding songs that stay with you for so long is not that common. I mean, “Chiquitita” has been around for 45 something years and it's still there, like a classic that everyone recognizes, even if you don't hear it every day. I think that says a lot about the kind of music ABBA made. I don't know if they used to make music with more feeling or what, but there was something there.

I sometimes get to wandering a bit about why this song is still going strong. It's not just because of the song itself, which by the way, sticks in your head pretty easy. It's more the message. We all go through hard times, and that feeling that you need someone to tell you that everything will be okay, that's something that never goes out of style. I find it interesting how ABBA, without overdoing it too much, managed to get that feeling into a pop song that has lasted so many years and will last for many more. For me the song will be timeless.

Another thing that has always seemed curious to me, but more than curious I could say valuable or important is the profits that ABBA donated to UNICEF with this song. For those who are not aware, the band gave all the profits of the song to help children. That to me is very valuable, because you can see what kind of people they are. You can tell they love people and are selfless. It is an excellent example of love for others. I'm sure they were able to help many children with the song. It is something to admire. That is my opinion.

As for the Spanish version, I have always been struck by how they manage to keep the same feeling despite the change of language. It's not easy to translate a song and still have that “I don't know what”, but with “Chiquitita” they did it quite well. In fact, it was a hit in Latin America as well, which only proves that good songs transcend barriers.
