My today's #ttt blog will be about a little transition in my iPhone4 audio player that happened last week. Actually, I think I havent been adjusting my playlist of recordings I put to my iphone for more than 12 years... not a thing I feel proud of, haha. I wish it had more memory, 16 Gb is not that much to fit all that I would want to. maybe that is the reason why I filled it once with my fave music and dont get back to it. Sometimes I push the 'random' button and enjoy the surprising and refreshing feelings that come from different transitions between the songs iphone chose at random. This time it built a funny but curious selection that I was inspired to talk about. So: Janis Joplin, Radiohead, Tame Impala.

Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee

(unofficial video; from «Pearl» LP, 1970)

Janis Joplin was a shiny icon of hippy generation, one of the most significant artists of 1960-es and greatest female vocalists ever. And this doubtlessly is her most acclaimed song, a hymn of Freedom, quintessence of the whole generation's dream of a new, happier life / society basics, etc. When one's trying to build a snapshot of 60-es music, this song comes indispensable. (Janis died of alcoholism in 1970,-- no happy end followed in real life). I wish I had more room to add 2-3 LPs to my playlist, but there was enough room for two songs only. The second, which is even more important for me personally, is 'Mercedes-benz'; a mockery of the traditional values of consumer society. It easily could come up instead of 'McGee', and its playback would not change anything, would not make any difference to the mood.

Radiohead - The Tourist

(from «OK Computer» LP, 1997)

And suddenly - after this bittersweet hippy hymn of 60-es came up a gloomy coda of the vip alternative rock album of 90-es, a representative of a completely different generation, which absorbed all the disappointments and losses of the 70s, 80s, 90s. Radiohead was my favorite band for more than 2 decades, and still occupies a lot of place in my heart (but shares it with a lot of other great bands). Still I will underline: this song is not my cup of tea; ofc it does play its conceptual role in the album, but it never matches my mood. 'Slow down, dude' is for those who rush at a speed of 100+ ... and I already slow down at every turn and even on level ground, for no apparent reason. Thats why most often I fast-forward this song. This time I listened it to the end - waiting patiently what track the iPhone will throw at me next, what the transition will be?

Tame Impala - Feels like we only go backwards

(official video; from «Lonerism» LP, 2012)

...and it did surprise me, picking the psychedelic track from Tame Impala that colored for me the entire summer of 2022. In my opinion, this is a brilliant representative of modern rock (call it alternative, classical - whatever you like), of course, it is not at the level of Led Zeppelin... not that scale; but in any case, these are the associations that come to my mind when listening to their music. And most importantly, this is again another young generation that throws away synthesizers with samples and takes up guitars again. Their melodies again make you dream of the 60s and the hippie era. I really hope that you will appreciate the video clip for this song.

I hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling around the globe without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for Three Tune Tuesday challenge run by @ablaze. Thank you for Joplin. I clicked on the song and it brought me back. Those of us who came of age in the sixties (I was 18 in '65) are like members of a distinct club. That culture affected the way we think and the way we see the world even today. You can't shake it...a mild contempt for consumerism, even a sort of disdain for competition. I know we need money to survive, and I've worked hard for it all my life. But still, I can't revere it the way so many people do. I see money as a ticket to freedom, not as way to own things. This I know I owe to the sixties.

Anyway, thanks for Joplin. It was a nice trip back. Too back freedom for her was a little too much to handle and it cost her her life.

You are an amazing person. 😘

You can't shake it...a mild contempt for consumerism, even a sort of disdain for competition.

I grew up a decade later, and belong rather to 80-es than 60-es, but can say smth like this about myself too.

Too back freedom for her was a little too much to handle and it cost her her life.

Maybe so. I am not precisely acquainted how did it happen. But it may be a different story too. Imagine: a person understands that ideals are illusory, the real world, despite all the efforts given, does not change, you stay in this rat race maze endlessly... and you fence yourself off from this shit - with drugs and alcohol. You move yourself to another world, better than this one. That may be the reasons and details of some departures - by means of drugs and alcohol, but due to different reasons. I see it rather like that.

Was a pure pleasure to receive to this little blog a comment like that. Hugs! 🙏

Thank you, my friend.

I think you're right about her alcoholism. For people who are really sensitive--and artists often fall in that group--escape is necessary. So many went down that path...

Hey great tunes!

I love me some Radiohead and read an article lately that Tom Yorke plan on just disappearing and fading into obscurity and living a simple life. Must be nice huh?

Tame Impala has some catchy tunes in an era that is pandering auto tune margarine and it is nice to see some neat new pop rock music.

Funny you pick Janis Joplin from way back when right when we are promoting a tribute act which is playing at a venue in our small town.

Great music for what hopefully will be a relaxing Sunday.

read an article lately that Tom Yorke plan on just disappearing and fading into obscurity and living a simple life.

I am not keeping my eyes on the boys interviews anymore, since all went wrong (actually - after 2005!). Drummer ventured solidly into solo career, Lead singer and songwriter (Thom) lended soundproducer (Nigel Godrich) and compositor (Jonny Greenwood) and established already several solo projects ('Atoms for peace', recent 'The Smile'), Jonny Greenwood moved into orchestral works and composing, serious stuff like that; I often notice him attending BAFTA/OSCAR ceremonies holding another statuette. All this shit... we old fans may feel proud for the boys but I f^&)@$#*ng dont approve this direction and simply dont like it personally.... no, ofc its a natural course of events for a great band that has been together for 30+ years. No one is obliged to maintain creative longevity for 50 years and release each time a new album better than the previous one. And Radiohead have already done a lot to remain in musical history. I see it like this. F..k new releases and endless daily questions from new fans "When they release a new album?" -- DAMN LISTEN to the old ones, bastards! all is there!! 😎

Totally agreed on that one.

The Bends and all of those albums were works of art and absolute instant classics in my mind. The newer ones seemed so damn pretentious and half of the "tracks" should have been left on the cutting room floor in my opinion.

Anyhow, awesome impact on my life already made and have fun fading into obscurity where they have been for me over the last couple decades.

👍

...on the cutting room floor in my opinion...

well said! everything is digital now, lol. thus, this option is simply out of the options, LOL

Thanks a lot for your pleasurable comment, Zeke!

Yeah. It might be an exception to the mainstream trend.. I don't know. They are from Australia (from the ass of the world), maybe that helped them not to spot into a general trend)))) Either way, they are real, real stuff - not somebody's marketing project.

I am in the know that I should advertise Hive at Reddit, not vice versa 😉 but here is a good conversation concerning Tame Impala's best tracks. If you be intrested to have a look at other folks personal picks, heres the link.

Funny you pick Janis Joplin from way back when right when we are promoting a tribute act which is playing at a venue in our small town.

Sweet, sweet coincidence!!!! It's always a pleasure to experience such coincidences around you, in your life. (Maybe it even does mean something... a sign that you are going in a right direction?..) It's really cool that this music will sound live in your city, that you may hear it from a hand's distance from the stage; this is exactly how music should sound and be perceived. Feel a bit envy 🙃 Lets share some !BEER and !PIZZA to celebrate it.

Well, one of the reasons for Hive is to connect us despite the thousands of miles and share experiences with the world! I may have to catch a slice of the Joplin tribute show for you.

Agree! this is one of the reasons for me to be here (cant afford myself travelling around the world and see places..)

After seeing your proposal for this #ttt I'm going to include Janis Joplin in my Spotify list, she was missing. There was a time when I couldn't stop listening to her.
I like Radiohead a lot too and my mood is now with How To Disappear Completely.

Heh, I always try to keep the recordings at my hands. Have no trust in streaming services still. But agree, Spotify may be handy. Since 2022 a lot of enterprises abandoned my country, including Spotify... but in this particular case I did not feel any loss at all! 😉 She is goddess. With this post I introduced her music to my daughter too. (Tho it might be too early, in her teen years).

ps. and what about Nina Simone and Kovacz? also unique voices and persons. 😎

😍 Nina Simone, yes, yes, yes! Kovacz, let me see... 🤔 I didn't know her... oh, my goodness, I was missing her - Listening now. 😮

Tame Impala - Feels like we only go backwards

❤️ never heard before

Radiohead - The Tourist

Missed these vibes, classic!

Janis Joplin

Cool track, love Janis Joplin.

Thank you for the post! 🙂🥂

Well, yeah, it is not so well known as Zeppelin... but it is a great contemporary band, I wish I could attend their gig. This track, and 'Mind mischief' and 'Half full glass of wine' are my three fave tracks from them, as well.
Glad to educate you about this name! In this selection, 1 > 3 would be far, far better without any Radiohead, hehe. (Второй тут оказался совсем не в кассу ))))
