Three Tune Tuesday #150 .:. complicated easy-listening

in Music8 months ago (edited)

Hi there, my friends. ⌛️ This week for my #ttt post I chose some relaxing music you may call easy-istening. The names are: Yma Sumac / Pink Martini / Britney Spears Postmodern Jukebox. Hope you will enjoy the selection.

Yma Sumac - Malambo No.1

(from 'Mambo!' LP, 1954)

Ima Sumac was the stage name of Soila Augusta Imperatrice Chavarri del Castillo, Peruvian soprano singer (she became a U.S. citizen in 1955). In Quechua language her stage name means: “Oh, what a beauty!” Unique range of five octaves and her diva personality made her a movie and pop music sensation in the 1950's Hollywood.

Each generation has its own pop idols, thats a normal situation. Those who act on stage are the ones who sell out stadiums and make press headlines; they grab away the noble titles of “the greatest artists of all time.” But mind you - Shakira, Aguilera, Britney Spears and Taylor Swift arent worthy even of wiping down the microphone stand for Ima Sumac, hehe.

Oops!... I Did It Again - Britney Spears cover by Haley Reinhart

(from 'Postmodern jukebox' LP, 2015)

Speaking of Britney Spears, look, I dont mind how good she was as a dancer and I dont listen to her music, but there as someone wisely stated (dont remember who it was) 'To leave your mark in the music history, it is enough to write just one song that folks would recognize at any continent' - and voila! - here it is, this song. Thanks to this timeless tune, Britney will be remembered for decades to come, and more and more cover versions will pop-up.

I fall in love with this version momentarily, what is so good with it? As the artists put it themselves, they reimagined it as if it was written for another icon -- Britney's idol Marilyn Monroe -- decades ago. They provided it some glitter of belle epoch of 30-es, and Haley Reinhart's timbre of voice and intonations, as well as plastic - are magical. Give it a look, I am sure you will be impressed. (I consider, new intonations for a good cover version is a must, blind copying provides no reason for it to exist (copy is a copy, why should it appear? just to prove yourself that "I can do it like that too”, but in this case ... we arent obliged to enjoy it either).

Pink Martini - ¿Dónde estás, Yolanda?

(performed live from Portland '2005)

For non-spanish speaking audience: the song's title means 'Where are you, Yolanda'; a lover is asking where his beloved girl have gone, as simple as that. Originally the song was composed by Peruvian musician Manuel Jimenez Fernandez. Later the tune was made popular by famous Cuban singer Orlando Contreras,

...and lately it has been popularized even more among the English-speaking audience by Pink Martini (which leads some people to believe they are the authors). Pink Martini is a nice band worth to explore, if you enjoy joyful easy-listening music with a slight notes of latin or tropicana.

The studio version many of us might have been acquainted while watching Sherlock BBC serial back in 2010. Classic! Personally, I felt a great joyful feeling of recognition when season 2 / the return of Sherlock began with my favorite, long-familiar song.

Hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling around the globe without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for Three Tune Tuesday challenge run by @ablaze. She did add something nice to the Britney cover. I do like a cover version if they bring something new to it, I was listening to a cover version if a song last week by 2 different artists, both different and great, so an artist can make a song I think.

I love that Yolanda tune, I didn't realize it was the Sherlock theme too!

so an artist can make a song

definitely so. "the song itself is nothing, the performance is everything!" as they say. but a good song adds to it +100% points too.

I was listening to a cover version if a song last week by 2 different artists

not sure if I understood you correct -- did you mean, you was listening to two covers of 'Oops I did it again' ?..

Not oops I did it again, but when a cover version makes a whole new genre, it's impressive sometimes.

I like this cover of a Bowie classic, even though I'm a huge Bowie fan

Ah, understand now what you was talking about. I love originals, but pretty much curious about the covers as well; it may give an intresting point of view on a certain tune. In the past I used to add to my #ttt posts different versions of the song, and plan to create more blogs like 'a history of one song'. see you! and a !BEER

'The Man who sold the world' is a nice example of a great cover that may boost popularity of a song quite sufficiently. Myself, I got acquainted with Bowie original first, so my heart belongs to it. But Nirvana's cover is very, very enjoyable... maybe even better than original 👍

Hey @mypathtofire, here is a little bit of BEER from @qwerrie for you. Enjoy it!

Easy listening is not my cup of tea really, though there are exceptions. Haley Reinhart - not in the least gravelly, and she would do well to look up Marianne Faithful for a voice apprenticeship if that's what she wants 😀

not in the least gravelly,

hmmm... okay, maybe we understand differently the meaning of this word. (perhaps it is also a matter of translation from one language to another). for me it is: rough, not soft.

as for easy-listening, I’m not a fan either! there are no such genre tracks in the post, it was just a click-bait title 😁 😎 😎

Yeah you're right that Britney's song is like an anthem in the pop music industry lol, that and Baby One More Time.

'anthem' sounds much more cool, rather than 'pop-standard' or simply 'hit' ☘️ and more promising!

Some awesome selections. Having lived much of the 90's in South America and the Caribbean I love salsa, merengue, mambo. I loved the first and last songs, those were fantastic. ¿Dónde estás, Yolanda? was really well done. The Britney Spears cover was entertaining too, great job.

I guess Britney did leave here mark in the music industry and won't soon be forgotten just because of that one song. She's not quite Marilyn status but she won't be forgotten. I'll have to put together some latin three tune Tuesdays soon. I know not everyone will appreciate them like I do, but they are a lot of fun.

Mambo Number 5 was covered well by Lou Vega back in 1999, I always thought it was too bad some more mambo music didn't sneak into popularity after that!

Lou Bega, yeah, I did give a listen to his performance.

I'll have to put together some latin three tune Tuesdays soon.

I'd be looking forward to it really! long ago I have considered my faves selection, but dont mind adding more tracks to it. tequila / cumparsita / caballe vejo / historia de un amor / tango criollo / guadalahara - are in this short list.

...lets share !LUV and of course !PIZZA
