Perhaps, but I don't give up when I see people who desire to be good being led down a dark path. Helping people see through the lies of the enemy is never an easy task.

As I said, if you're afraid and you'd rather not ask God for the truth on this topic then there's no point discussing it.
You're the one seeking truth from pundits and Google, rather than God. I have asked for truth, and I know truth.

Nope. I pray to God everyday since last year and He eventually guided me to praying for souls in purgatory. I too never prayed for them before until He asked me to. So that's why if you'd rather not ask Him about this topic then that's too bad.
Did it not seem odd that God would ask you to pray to God on behalf of souls whose fate is entirely in God's control? Are you sure that God is the one guiding you?
I suggest to look up St. Teresa of Avila and St. Ignatius of Loyola and their writings to know why. π
