Hello all Hive People & Splinterlands lovers,
The Splinterlands team always conducts experiments to enhance the user experience and improve the game ecosystem. We have seen many changes happen in the past that completely altered the gameplay. The team has again made changes in the battle games and league system, which affects the whole gameplay. They hinted at these changes during the previous AMA, and now they have been implemented on February 29, just after the end of the previous season. I take these changes in a positive way and hope they will work as planned, creating a healthy, competitive, and smooth experience for new and existing players. Changes are a part of life, and so they are in this wonderful play-to-earn game as well. Changes inject new energy into the players, and I have observed in the past that the Splinterlands team implements them perfectly and in a timely manner. The recent change in the airdrop system is also a classic example of this. For existing players, it may take some time to get familiar with the new changes, but I am sure they will appreciate them in the future, as the changes are for the overall betterment of the game. The changes will address one major point, ensuring that new players join the game. They will surely provide better game experiences for newbies, making them more engaged in gameplay. In the current scenario, new players struggle more to move up, which also discourages them from playing the game. The new player and their association with the game for a long time are the backbone of the game ecosystem. The influx of new players and their subsequent departure in a short time is not good for the game ecosystem. If you want to check, here is the link to the announcement post from the official account of Splinterlands.
The announcement post details every change, but here I am sharing some brief and my views on the same.
The first line of the post is very touching and clearly explains the team's focus, which is building a better overall game experience for both new and existing players. Some existing players also struggle along with new players to get their posting in the game. So with the new changes, I hope the environment will be more competitive and will give a fair chance to new and lower league players. The Novice and Champion league players are spared from the changes, which I guess is good also, as the Champion league players have made a heavy investment in the game and most of them are very first players, so they consider it a first mover advantage. The team has understood and considered the pain areas that were making the game complicated, and some players were also using unfair activity. The changes have a major impact on the league system.
From February 29 onwards, there will be no leaderboard for different leagues except Champion. The players are free to use any level card, as there will not be any penalty for using lower level cards, which was restricting many players from going to higher leagues as they were getting lower rewards.
The matchmaking is not based on the league you are playing; in the new system, it will be based on the rating. If you are confused about ranking and rating, let me give a small brief on the same. The rating is the points you gain for playing the battles during the season. The ranking, on the other hand, shows your position in a particular league for a particular season. They are both connected, as more rating also means you have a good ranking.
The players will get a bigger reward pool of SPS but also divided among more players. There will be two SPS reward pools: one is for Champion players only, and the other is for the rest of the players. The reward pool for different leagues will be a single pool now and will be distributed among all players as per their performance.
The best part I like is the rating points distribution. The flat rating system will give equal points for a win or loss in battle. Of course, for a win, it will be positive, and for a loss, it will be negative, but not like what happened in the past, where players got fewer points for a win and more negative points for losing a battle. The winning streak is still applicable.
As I mentioned earlier, I am taking these changes in a positive way and hoping that they will improve the overall experience of new as well as existing players. It may take one or two seasons for players to settle down with the new changes. I believe in the game and the team, which is very dynamic and always eager to conduct new experiments to improve the game, players, and tokenomics of the game.
