Last Saturday, January 11, was celebrated on the day of a drink known in many English-speaking countries, although less so in other nations, which has a somewhat disputed or uncertain origin, it is the delicious HOT TODDY, also known as GROGUI. There are records that indicate that this drink was born approximately in 1786, in India, since there are files that show a recipe based on liquor with hot water, spices and sugar. There is another version that indicates that this drink was basically a concoction, a medicine based on brandy, cinnamon and sugar, that a doctor prescribed to cure the flu or cold.
There are many recipes to make this delicious and comforting cocktail, but they are always based on: Boiling water, liquor, sugar, spices. Whiskey, bourbon, brandy, cognac, fortified wine, rum, getc. can be used. And among the sweetening elements, white sugar, brown sugar, jaggery, honey can be used. The spices are at the discretion of each person, but the presence of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, anise, etc. is a constant. The addition of a citrus touch, such as lemon, orange and/or tangerine, is also very common. Below, we share a recipe proposed by the Chivas Regal House, to prepare the
