Doing homework can be a challenge if you don't know how to do it. Relatively recently I was helping a family member to make a poster for her daughter, it was for an exhibition in one of the states of my country, Venezuela.

I am not an expert in this type of work but I will tell you my DIY experience, in case it can be useful for all of you.

Hacer tareas escolares puede llegar a ser un desafío si no sabes cómo hacerlas. Hace relativamente poco estuve ayudando a un familiar a hacer una lámina para su hija, era para una exposición de unos de los Estados de mi país, Venezuela.

No soy un experto en este tipo de trabajos pero les contaré mi experiencia DIY, en caso de que pueda ser de utilidad para todos ustedes.

Step by step

First we have to know where we are going to work. I bought a fairly large sheet of bond paper, you can see the size of the pencil compared to the sheet.

This was my work space, so I defined the center by making small horizontal and vertical folds in the middle of the sheet to define the middle point of the sheet.

Paso a paso

Primeramente tenemos que saber en donde vamos a trabajar. Yo compré una lámina de papel bond bastante grande, pueden ver el tamaño del lápiz en comparación a la lámina.

Este fue mi espacio de trabajo, así que definí el centro haciendo pequeños dobleces horizontales y verticales en el medio de la lámina para definir el punto medio de la lámina.

I planned to do a lot of drawings for the sheet, but I didn't want to do them directly there, I used another sheet of thicker paper to capture each of the drawings there.

It was a sheet where I would talk about the gastronomy, location and traditions of the state, so I had to make a variety of art. There were several drawings, so I did them first on this sheet.

Planeaba hacer un montón de dibujos para la lámina, pero no los quise hacer directamente allí, sino que usé otra lámina de papel más grueso para plasmar cada uno de los dibujos allí.

Era una lámina en donde hablaría de la gastronomía, ubicación y tradiciones del Estado, así que debía hacer arte variado. Fueron varios los dibujos, así que los hice primeramente en esta lámina.

Each of these drawings, and the sheet itself in general, I planned to paint using colored chalks. It's not a material I usually use, but I like it for coloring paper, more than even the colors themselves, because you color faster and you can create quite interesting fades.

This is the box of chalks I used:

Cada uno de estos dibujos, y la propia lámina en general, planeaba pintarla usando tizas de colores. No es un material que acostumbro a usar, pero me gusta para colorear papel, más que incluso los propios colores, porque coloreas más rápido y puedes crear difuminados bastante interesantes.

Esta es la caja de tizas que utilicé:

First I began by cutting out each of the drawings from the sheet of paper where I had drawn them. Then I continued painting with the chalks, making the corresponding blurring until I left a smooth surface on the paper.

After I painted the drawing with the chalks, I took a black marker to paint the border of each drawing.

Primeramente comencé recortando cada uno de los dibujos de la lámina de papel en donde los había dibujado. Luego continué pintando con las tizas, haciendo los difuminados correspondientes hasta dejar una superficie lisa en en el papel.

Después que pinté el dibujo con las tizas, tomé un marcador negro para pintar e borde de cada dibujo.

Below you can see all the drawings I made for the poster. Some of the ones you can see are the map of the country, a corn cob, a traditional candy, a plate of fish fruit, an avocado and a flag.

A continuación pueden ver todos los dibujos que hice para la lámina. Algunos de los que se pueden ver es el mapa del país, una mazorca de maíz, un dulce tradicional, un plato de pescado fruto, un aguacate y una bandera.

After finishing all the drawings, I started to make the letters of the sheet, painting them with the sheets. I even had a few mistakes over there in the letters, but nothing that couldn't be corrected. In fact, easy correction is one of the advantages of working with chalk and pencil, something you couldn't do if you worked with paint. Each material has its pros and cons.

I did the blurring on the letters and also marked the edge of each letter with a marker, just as I had done with the drawings.

Después de terminar todos los dibujos, comencé a hacer las letras de la lámina, pintándolas con las láminas. Incluso tuve algunos errores por allí en las letras, pero nada que no se pudiera corregir. De hecho, el corregir fácilmente es una de las ventajas de trabajar con tizas y lápiz, algo que no podrías hacer si trabajas con pintura. Cada material tiene sus pro y sus contra.

Hice el difuminado en las letras y también marqué el borde de cada letra con un marcador, tal como había hecho con los dibujos.

I pasted each drawing in each category that was on the sheet, because I divided it into four parts: Gastronomy, Location, Historical Sites, Symbols and Traditions.

Each of these spaces, distributed in the corners of the sheet, would have one or more of the drawings I made.

Pegué cada dibujo en cada categoría que había en la lámina, porque la dividí en cuatro partes: Gastronomía, Ubicación, Sitios Históricos, Símbolos y Tradiciones.

Cada uno de estos espacios, distribuidos en las esquinas de la lámina, tendrían uno o más de los dibujos que hice.

The last thing I did was to use chalk dust, which I obtained by scraping the chalk with a small cutter. With this powder I made a blurring of different colors along the entire sheet.

Lo último que hice fue usar polvillo de la misma tiza, el cual obtuve raspando la tiza con un pequeño cutter. Con este polvillo hice un difuminado de distintos colores a lo largo de toda la lámina.
