BeerSaturday 373 - Toasté Moutarde Chou (Sir John)

in BEER3 months ago

Here's my entry for BeerSaturday 373 with a rather strange beer brewed by Brasserie Sir John, the Toasté Moutarde Chou (Toasted Mustard Cabbage 🤔). The image and the name of the beer piqued my curiosity. And since I enjoyed my last Oatcream-style beer, I didn't hesitate for long...

And like every time, here is the map of Quebec where I can show you precisely the location of the brewery. we stay west of Montreal to the town of Lachute in the Laurentides (not far from Montreal) to visit the Brasserie Sir John.

I just stopped by the brasserie one evening last week on my way back to Montreal to eat and have a beer or two. Here's the brasserie that doubles as a restaurant with a lovely terrace that must be very pleasant in non-rainy summers 😀.

And I was able to taste another Oat Cream DIPA, the Amsterdam, while enjoying ceviche at the bar. I don't know if this was because the beer was served straight from the keg, but I preferred this version, less strange, shall we say.

📜 Brewery / Brasserie :

Sir John Brewing is based in Lachute. It is named after Sir John Johnson, an American officer and politician (1742-1830) who was loyal to the British crown during the American Revolution. Exiled to Canada, he owned the seigneury of Argenteuil in the early 19th century, where the town of Lachute now stands. But back to the beer, the brewery was founded by 4 guys including Joêl Dupras and Maxime Hébert in July 2019. They didn't know much about brewing, but they loved good beers, especially the New England IPAs produced in New York and Vermont.

The Toasté Moutarde Chou is a oatcream DIPA. For the Oatcream style, you can check out Alto CR from BreWskey: BeerSaturday 369. For DIPA aka Double India Pale Ale, this is a beer characterized by a pronounced hop flavor and high alcohol content. In the glass, you'll find the characteristic Oatcream color: a cloudy, almost orangey yellow with a beautiful white head. To the taste, the strange side of the beer's name comes back to mind. I don't know how to describe it, but the 8.5% alcohol is well attenuated by the Oatcream side, with a little taste of honey at the end that I didn't appreciate so much. Glad to have tasted it, but the next Oatcream from the brasserie Sir John will without hesitation be the Amsterdam.

Design

The design is as strange as the beer, with this photo of Toasté Moutarde Chou. And the background color of the label is exactly the same as that of the beer. In conclusion, the label is perfect, showing exactly the type of beer we're about to taste.

Bon mardi à toi

Googled the history a bit of the seigneury of Argenteuil. Interesting. My knowledge of Canadian history is pretty limited.

Toasted Mustard Cabbage 😂 wtf lol I don't know if I would even eat this much less drink it. Ok I googled this also. I guess it is a thing. I have had mustard greens in the south so it would be interesting to try mustard cabbage. Sounds similar but a little different flavor and texture.

I think it's a sandwich with cabbage and mustard... I don't even know if it really exists.
Have a great night

Hey @heroldius, here is a little bit of BEER from @servelle for you. Enjoy it!

Do you want to win SOME BEER together with your friends and draw the BEERKING.

Oh my, I would never have thought that such a beer even existed. Here in South Africa, we have some experimental breweries, but none that have brewed anything in the class of this beer! I would have loved to taste it. Awesome post as well! You really sold me on this place, I would love to visit it. Even if only for this beer.
