Greetings!
Exactly on the 30th of last month (May 2024), I traveled home to my village for a function. It was a fun event where we ate and drank well. During and after the big day, the compound was so full of people that my room was no longer my own because of the crowd. It was very difficult to settle down and write an article, so I decided to leave the compound and go to the neighboring land, which was spacious. It had no tangible building, and a church was constructing a hut-like building on the site.
Before then, there had been a church in that space, but when they moved out, it remained empty.
I took a plastic chair and moved to the area to have some "me time" to write my article. While I was there, some children, perhaps because they saw me there, came and started playing. I didn't notice what kind of play it was at first because my eyes were glued to my phone. But when I saw what they were doing, I was amazed and laughing as well.
I loved the scene, so I positioned my camera and began to record them.
The first scene was of them praying, imitating the pastor and the church that once used the space. The girl in the yellow shirt was their leader and she was leading the prayer. The empty water cans they were holding close to their mouths were their microphones. They were speaking in English in a very funny way, mimicking how many clergymen act when praying. It might be different in your country (outside Nigeria).
The next scene was when the girl in yellow decided to perform a miracle. Yes, you heard me right. She tried performing a miracle of deliverance by placing her hand on the forehead of one of them, and the girl (the one being delivered) began to react as if it was working and fell to the ground.
I was totally wowed because it was surprising how the girl played along without rehearsal. It was just a mere play, and it appeared so fun to watch.
I was still watching from afar without them knowing that I was recording them. Suddenly, it seemed as if some of them or all of them didn't follow the instructions correctly from the girl in yellow.
She began to beat them on the palm with her hand, and they enjoyed it. When one of them didn't get the beating, she insisted that she must be beaten, so she brought out her hands. It was hilarious.
When one of them noticed that I had been recording them, she laughably left the play scene and came to me, asking to watch the video. The disturbance was too much because I refused initially, but when I couldn't hold out any longer, I had to give in. That's when all of them rushed to where I was sitting to watch the video, and that's where I lost it too. I lost my concentration and couldn't continue writing the article.
