Trivia Tuesday is a series in which I choose a topic, and provide Fun Facts or Interesting Trivia about it. Ramadan is less than a week away, so I'll take this opportunity to let you guys know more about it!

Fun Facts About Ramadan

πŸŒ™ 1. Ramadan is a Lunar Month

The month of Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar which uses the moon to determine the start and end of each month.

This means that Ramadan comes once a year, but it does so 11-12 days ealier each year in terms of Gregorian Calendar that's used in most of the world.

πŸŒ™ 2. Ramadan and Fasting in Islam

Fasting in Ramadan is the 4th Pillar of Islam. During this month, Muslims are required by their faith to abstain from Eating, Drinking and other (normally allowed) actions from Dawn to Sunset.

Many non-muslims believe that fasting is hard. Sometimes it is, but it's easier than it sounds and many people have tried fasting in Ramadan for the first time can confirm.

Not everyone is expected to fast. Children aren't obligated to fast, though some Muslim children fast for half a day. Those who are traveling or people who can't fast are expected to postpone their fasting, or pay a share in Alms Giving. Women who are in their period or breastfeeding are forbidden from fasting.

πŸŒ™ 3. Length of the Month

Ramadan starts and ends with the appearance of the new moon, it's a cycle that lasts 29 or 30 days. The last day is to be observed and announced by people of authority in the Muslim community.

The month of Ramadan can be of a difference length between years, or even between certain places of earth in the same year.

πŸŒ™ 4. Month of the Qur'an

The first verses of the Qur'an were revealed in Ramadan in a night called "Night of Power." This night is observed in the last ten nights of Ramadan and celebrated by praying and reading Qur'an in it.

πŸŒ™ 5. Ramadan Activities

Many TV shows, Online Programs and Real Life events in the Islamic World are timed around Ramadan! Not only it's a month-long event of worship, but also of celebration.

I don't know about anyone else, but the day of Ramadan to me seems longer. These events help pass the time, though spending time with the Qur'an is much more fulfilling.

For better or worse, Ramadan is also the month of the most spending in modern Muslim world. πŸ’Έ

Many Muslims are more generous with Donations and Charity in Ramadan, which leads many Muslim community to have various places where you can find free food, mainly around the sunset.

What do you think?

Ramadan is my favorite month of the Islamic Calendar. It changes my routine, and it's not easy but massively fulfilling to adapt. Abstaining from food and water is one of the easiest things about Ramadan. Watching what we say and how spend our days isn't as easy. Ask any Muslim about it, though. It's worth it.

I have a lot of other Fun Facts I could write about Ramadan. Let me know if you want a follow up for this article. I could write about the Eid as well. If you're reading this while fasting, I pray for your fast to be blessed.

I love reading about this practice, fasting is a powerful act of faith.

Abstaining from food and water is one of the easiest things about Ramadan. Watching what we say and how spend our days isn't as easy.

I agree, that as powerful as fasting is, taming the tongue and being careful and deliberate in our actions is even more powerful. And challenging. Thank you for sharing this about Ramadan.
