Since my time as a student and later, as a teacher in the area of Literature, I have felt a special taste for building the analysis of many literary works. It is not an easy task considering that there are thousands of them and reading takes time, but I decided to gradually create this collection that will not only serve as a support for many students, but will also be enjoyed by many readers.

Today it is the turn of a work that I remember having read in fragments during the diversified cycle, and that I had to reread to be able to structure its analysis in the parts that I always deal with; biography of the author, theme of the work, analysis and my opinion. It is the novel "Wuthering Heights", by the writer Emily Brontë.

💕 Who is Emily Brontë?

Emily Jane Brontë, is a writer of English origin born in 1818. She was the fifth of six children. Her father was a parish priest. She was a teacher, governess, writer, poet, and novelist. Her most important work, without a doubt, was "Wuthering Heights", a novel that was considered a classic of English literature.

At that time, it was very difficult for women to be recognized, even in the field of literature, so Emily had to publish this work under a false male name, Ellis Bell. This was among other things, because the novel had somewhat wild overtones according to the critics of the time.

Death surprised her when she was very young, barely 30 years old, victim of tuberculosis.

💕 What theme does the play "Wuthering Heights" address?

Wuthering Heights is the name of the estate that belonged to the Earnshaw family. This novel has as its main theme, the revenge of Heathcliff, adopted son of the family, and as a romantic theme, the idyll centered between Catherine and Heathcliff, interpreted by the latter as a betrayal that further triggers his thirst for revenge. The beginning of the story is marked by the nobility of a man who decides to adopt a young boy to give him a family, but this decision triggers negative feelings of selfishness, hatred, envy, betrayal and evil, mixed with pure feelings of love and empathy, between his two children and the adopted boy.

Subsequently, the revenge of this young man materializes, for all the mistreatment and betrayal suffered at the hands of his foster brothers, and the outcome is very tragic.

💕 Summary and analysis of "Wuthering Heights".

Before analyzing the work, it should be noted that the type of narrator present is not omniscient, since this type of narrator knows everything that happens in the story without being inside it, and on the contrary, the narrators of Wuthering Heights, are part of their characters. So it could be said that the type of narrator is a witness, since he is in the third person and narrates the events that happen around him. These main narrators are Nelly Dean, the Earnshaw family's trusted maid, and Lockwood, Heathcliff's neighbor who rented the Thrush Farm.

Notably, it is Lockwood who begins the narrative of the play when he goes to Wuthering Heights to talk to Heathcliff. It can be observed that the events start from that moment in the narration and then focus on Nelly's participation as the narrator of the whole story of the two families, in retrospective form.

This story begins when Mr. Earnshaw returns from a trip taking with him a boy of gypsy origin, barely 7 years old. His intention was to adopt him and give him a home and a family, counting on his children to accept him without problems. But his two children, Catherine and Hindley had different reactions, Catherine gave him her friendship and support, while her brother Hindley, rejected him completely, feeling jealous and thinking that he was stealing his father's love. From that moment on, she began to hate him and to do evil things to him, and when their father died, she took him out of the home, placing him as a servant in the hacienda.

Heathcliff was only mistreated by his foster brother, while Catherine invited him to her games and walks, so he met her neighbors, Isabella and Edgar, who were very conceited children. Gradually Heathcliff fell in love with Catherine, and felt betrayed when she decided to marry his neighbor, Edgar Linton. Between Hindley's mistreatment and Catherine's betrayal, he fled the estate only to return years later, a wealthy gentleman, ready to take possession of his rights.

He found his brother immersed in alcohol and gambling for the death of his wife, and takes away all his property, then decided to marry Isabella despite still loving Catherine, little by little his revenge begins to take shape. Catherine dies after giving birth to their daughter, whom they also named Catherine, Isabella ends up separating from him because of his mistreatment, and in Edgar's emotional breakdown due to the loss of his wife, Heathcliff also takes the opportunity to take possession of the Thrush Farm. Eventually, he manages to get Catherine and Edgar's daughter to marry his son, a sick boy who dies shortly after the wedding, and meanwhile, he also unloads all his resentment on his nephew Hareton, for the tortures his brother gave him in the past.

As can be seen, the context of the play is charged with violence, resentment and revenge for the conflicting feelings of the past, and their children suffered the consequences of these many devalues. The story ends with the death of all these characters full of hatred and thirst for revenge, and gives way to the birth of a present generation that tries to heal the wounds of the past and start a new history without hatred and revenge.Hareton (Hindley's son), and Catherine (Edgar and Catherine's daughter), unite their lives to move forward the two estates, Thrush Farm, and Wuthering Heights.

💕 My opinion about the play.

This play provides many valuable messages, although it leaves us with a bitter taste for the very open reflection of the negative feelings that can be generated by ambition and discrimination.Although Hindley and Catherine were raised in the same way, in a home full of values, young Hindley harbored many negative feelings in his soul, and he totally unloaded them on the little adopted child.On the contrary, Catherine showed better feelings of solidarity and empathy, which made her different from her brother, and aroused Heathcliff's love. And finally, although the revenge instinct of the little gypsy is not justified, it is understandable after receiving so much mistreatment, and feeling betrayed by the woman he loved.

This is a somewhat strong story that shows many devalues in a single being, but it invites us to reflect on that very moment in the upbringing of our children where they are still soft dough and are in the process of reinforcing their good or bad feelings. It is crucial that parents nurture empathy in their hearts to grow up leaving indelible traces of love and kindness.

Desde mis tiempos de estudiante y posteriormente, como docente en el área de Literatura, he sentido un gusto especial por construir el análisis de muchas obras literarias. No es fácil la tarea considerando que son miles y la lectura toma su tiempo, pero me propuse ir poco a poco creando esta colección que no sólo servirá de soporte para muchos estudiantes, sino que la podrán disfrutar tantos lectores.

Hoy le corresponde el turno a una obra que recuerdo haber leído por fragmentos durante el ciclo diversificado, y que tuve que releer para poder estructurar su análisis en las partes que siempre abordo; biografía del autor, tema de la obra, análisis y mi opinión. Se trata de la novela “Cumbres Borrascosas”, de la escritora Emily Brontë.

💕 ¿Quién es Emily Brontë?

Emily Jane Brontë, es una escritora de origen inglés nacida en el año 1818. Fue la quinta de 6 hijos. Su padre era párroco. Fue profesora, institutriz, escritora, poetiza, y novelista. Su obra más importante, sin duda alguna, fue “Cumbres Borrascosas”, novela que fue considerada como un clásico de la literatura inglesa.

En esa época, era muy difícil el reconocimiento de las mujeres, incluso en el ámbito de la literatura, por lo que Emily tuvo que publicar esta obra con un nombre falso masculino, Ellis Bell. Esto fue entre otras cosas, porque la novela tenía matices un poco salvajes según los críticos de la época.

La muerte la sorprendió estando muy joven, apenas con 30 años, víctima de tuberculosis.

💕 ¿Qué tema aborda la obra “Cumbres Borrascosas”?

Cumbres Borrascosas es el nombre de la hacienda que pertenecía a la familia Earnshaw. Esta novela tiene como tema principal, la venganza de Heathcliff, hijo adoptivo de la familia, y como tema romántico, el idilio centrado entre Catherine y Heathcliff, interpretado por éste como una traición que desencadena aún más su sed de venganza. El inicio de la historia se marca con la nobleza de un hombre que decide adoptar a un joven para brindarle una familia, pero esta decisión desencadena sentimientos negativos de egoísmo, odio, envidia, traición y maldad, mezclados con sentimientos puros de amor y empatía, entre sus dos hijos y el joven adoptado.

Posteriormente se materializa la venganza de este joven, por todo el maltrato y la traición sufridos de manos de sus hermanos de crianza, y el desenlace es muy trágico.

💕 Resumen y análisis de “Cumbres Borrascosas”.

Antes de analizar la obra, hay que resaltar que el tipo de narrador presente no es omnisciente, ya que este tipo de narrador conoce todo lo que sucede en la historia sin estar dentro de ella, y por el contrario, los narradores de Cumbres Borrascosas, forman parte de sus personajes. Así que se podría decir que el tipo de narrador es testigo, ya que se encuentra en tercera persona y narra los hechos que acontecen a su alrededor. Estos narradores principales son Nelly Dean, la criada de confianza de la familia Earnshaw, y Lockwood, el vecino de Heathcliff quien alquiló la Granja de los Tordos.

Cabe destacar, que es Lockwood quien inicia la narración de la obra cuando se dirige a Cumbres Borrascosas a hablar con Heathcliff. Se puede observar que los hechos inician desde ese momento en la narración para luego dirigirse y centrarse en la participación de Nelly como narradora de toda la historia de las dos familias, en forma retrospectiva.

Esta historia comienza cuando el señor Earnshaw regresa de un viaje llevando con él un niño de escasos 7 años y de origen gitano. Su intención era adoptarlo y brindarle un hogar y una familia, contando con que sus hijos lo aceptarían sin problemas. Pero sus dos hijos, Catherine y Hindley tuvieron reacciones diferentes, Catherine le brindó su amistad y apoyo, mientras que su hermano Hindley, lo rechazó por completo al sentir celos y pensar que le estaba robando el amor de su padre. Desde ese momento comenzó a odiarlo y hacerle maldades, y al morir su padre, lo sacó del hogar colocándolo como criado de la hacienda.

Heathcliff sólo recibió maltratos de su hermano de crianza, mientras que Catherine lo invitaba a sus juegos y paseos, de esa manera conoció a sus vecinos, Isabella y Edgar, quienes eran niños muy presumidos. Poco a poco Heathcliff se fue enamorando de Catherine, y se sintió traicionado cuando ella decidió casarse con su vecino, Edgar Linton. Entre los maltratos de Hindley y la traición de Catherine, huyó de la hacienda para regresar años después, convertido en un caballero adinerado, dispuesto a tomar posesión de sus derechos.

Encontró a su hermano sumido en el alcohol y el juego por la muerte de su esposa, y le quita todas sus propiedades, luego decidió casarse con Isabella a pesar de seguir amando a Catherine, poco a poco su venganza comienza a agarrar cuerpo. Catherine muere después de dar a luz a su hija a quien también llamaron Catherine, Isabella termina separándose de él por sus maltratos, y en el quiebre emocional de Edgar por la pérdida de su esposa, Heathcliff también aprovecha para apoderarse de la Granja de los Tordos. Con el tiempo, logra que la hija de Catherine y Edgar, se case con su hijo, un chico enfermo que muere al poco tiempo de la boda, y mientras tanto, también descarga todo su resentimiento sobre su sobrino Hareton, por las torturas que le diera su hermano en el pasado.

Como se puede observar, el contexto de la obra está cargado de violencia, resentimiento y venganza por los sentimientos encontrados del pasado, y los hijos de ellos sufrieron las consecuencias de esta gran cantidad de desvalores. La historia finaliza con la muerte de todos estos personajes llenos de odio y sed de venganza, y le brinda el paso al nacimiento de una presente generación que trata de sanar las heridas del pasado y comenzar una nueva historia sin odios ni venganzas. Hareton (hijo de Hindley), y Catherine (hija de Edgar y Catherine), unen sus vidas para sacar adelante a las dos haciendas, la Granja de los Tordos, y Cumbres Borrascosas.

💕 Mi opinión acerca de la obra

Esta obra brinda muchos mensajes valiosos, aunque nos deja un sabor amargo por el reflejo tan abierto de los sentimientos negativos que se pueden generar de la ambición y la discriminación. A pesar de que Hindley y Catherine fueron criados de igual manera, en un hogar lleno de valores, el joven Hindley albergaba muchos sentimientos negativos en su alma, y los descargó totalmente sobre el pequeño niño adoptado. Por el contrario, Catherine demostraba mejores sentimientos de solidaridad y empatía, lo que la hacía diferente a su hermano, y despertara el amor de Heathcliff. Y finalmente, aunque el instinto de venganza del pequeño gitano no se justifica, es comprensible después de recibir tanto maltrato, y sentirse traicionado por la mujer que amaba.

Ésta es una historia un poco fuerte que demuestra muchos desvalores en un solo ser, pero nos invita a reflexionar acerca de ese justo momento de la crianza de nuestros hijos donde son aún masa blanda y están en proceso de reforzar sus buenos o malos sentimientos. Es determinante que los padres alimentemos la empatía en sus corazones para crecer dejando huellas indelebles de amor y bondad.
