One of the buildings that never goes unnoticed for me, and I think for many others as well, is the Lonja del Comercio, located next to the Plaza de San Francisco de Asís. Its exact address is the block comprising Lamparilla, Oficios, Baratillo and Obrapia streets. This imposing building, to which I have only had access once in my life for work reasons, captures my attention powerfully. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century, concluding its construction in 1909, and in 1995 an important restoration was carried out by the Office of the Historian.

Una de las edificaciones que nunca pasa desapercibida para mí, y creo que para muchos otros también, es la Lonja del Comercio, ubicada a un costado de la Plaza de San Francisco de Asís. Su dirección exacta es la manzana que comprende las calles Lamparilla, Oficios, Baratillo y Obrapía. Este imponente edificio, al cual solo he tenido acceso una vez en mi vida por motivos laborales, capta poderosamente mi atención. Fue construido a principios del siglo XX, concluyendo su construcción en 1909, y en 1995 se llevó a cabo una importante restauración a cargo de la Oficina del Historiador.
It is a magnificent building destined for commercial offices, which has rental spaces for companies interested in venturing into the country, as well as a mini telephone exchange. It also has gastronomic facilities where, between business and contracts, you can enjoy some refreshments. During the restoration, the offices were remodeled and a computer-controlled air conditioning and lighting system was installed.
Es un magnífico edificio destinado a oficinas comerciales, que cuenta con espacios de alquiler para empresas interesadas en aventurarse en el país, así como una mini central telefónica. Además, dispone de instalaciones gastronómicas donde, entre negocios y contratos, se puede disfrutar de algún refrigerio. Durante la restauración, se remodelaron las oficinas y se instaló un sistema de climatización y luces controlado por computadoras.
What most captivates me and what I find unique about this building is that each of its five floors is completely different from the other. This reminds me of a hand, which has five fingers, all different, but which together make up the hand. Similarly, all the floors of this building come together to form this large structure.
Lo que más me cautiva y encuentro singular en este edificio es que cada uno de sus cinco pisos es completamente diferente al otro. Esto me recuerda a una mano, que tiene cinco dedos, todos diferentes, pero que juntos conforman la mano. De manera similar, todos los pisos de este edificio se unen para formar esta gran estructura.
The whole building is striking, but the main facade facing the Plaza is spectacular. The portal has three large arches covering the height of two floors. On each side of the central arch there are in relief two horns filled with fruits and food, and in the center, a snake. I associate this symbol very much with the horn of abundance and prosperity. The second floor of the façade is also imposing, with columns in relief and, within the three central arches, there are triangle-shaped terminations that remind me of Greek or Roman architecture.
Todo el edificio es llamativo, pero la fachada principal que da a la Plaza es espectacular. El portal tiene tres grandes arcos que cubren la altura de dos pisos. A cada lado del arco central hay en relieve dos cuernos llenos de frutas y alimentos, y en el centro, una serpiente. Asocio mucho este símbolo al cuerno de la abundancia y la prosperidad. El segundo piso de la fachada también es imponente, con columnas en relieve y, dentro de los tres arcos centrales, hay terminaciones en forma de triángulo que me recuerdan a la arquitectura griega o romana.
The remaining two floors of the façade are smaller, like the rest of the building, but their design is different. One of them has arched windows, while the other has square windows. Above them, in the center, there is a clock that marks the time, and above it, a triangle. It really is a spectacular design. When you look at the building from any angle, it is a wonderful sight.
Los dos pisos restantes de la fachada son más pequeños, como el resto del edificio, pero su diseño es diferente. Uno de ellos tiene ventanas arqueadas, mientras que el otro tiene ventanas cuadradas. Sobre ellas, en el centro, hay un reloj que marca la hora, y encima, un triángulo. Realmente, es un diseño espectacular. Cuando se mira el edificio desde cualquier ángulo, es una vista maravillosa.
At the top of the building, on an attic, there is a dome where the statue of Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, stands on a single foot. This statue is a replica of the one in the Louvre Museum. In 1999, after a devastating cyclone hit the coast of Havana, the statue was toppled, a sad event. However, in 2001 it was restored. In the photo on the poster in the basement of the building you can see the dome better, difficult to see from below, which is where I took the photos.
En lo alto del edificio, sobre un ático, hay una cúpula donde se alza sobre un solo pie la estatua de Mercurio, el dios romano del comercio. Esta estatua es una réplica de la que se encuentra en el Museo del Louvre. En 1999, tras un devastador ciclón que azotó la costa de La Habana, la estatua fue derribada, un triste suceso. Sin embargo, en 2001 fue restaurada. En la foto que se encuentra en el poster que está en los bajos del edificio se aprecia mejor la cúpula, difícil de ver desde abajo que fue de donde tomé las fotos.
